Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Politics and Culture - September 2010

As Congress breaks from the fights that have defined their terms of service the American people are left with unfinished business on table.

Unfinished business that is forgotten with the partisan rancor focused on bail out’s, pledges that are sure to be broken and the false bravado that has defined both sides of the conversation during the current session of the United States Congress

Compared to other systems of government around the globe it’s been said that the Two Party system of the United States Government is superior due to its efficiency.

Efficiency that didn’t come from a law passed to limit the conversation but from an evolution within the system that created a two party majority

Among the laundry list of things an elected official must take care of is ensuring the safety, health and welfare of the populous and keeping the boat afloat for future generations.

These responsibilities rank highest when it comes to the common sense test of judging the body of work in any government but the United States of America has failed miserably on all counts

Understanding the Anger

September 26th 2010 12:47
For every news report, political parties pledge and backwards comment about why the American people are angry is a missed opportunity to find the root of the problem.

The root of the problem that has nothing to do with the actions of George W. Bush, a Democratically controlled Congress drunk with power, the "need" for America to turn back to God, Broken Glass Ceilings, how we should have voted for Senator McCain or the fact hat President Obama and the Majority powers in Congress are still not getting it

For every election year there is a new promise for the kind of “change” America needs to renew the responsibilities of legislators to the American people.

For every “Contract with America”, “Campaign for Change” and “Tea Party” the American people are given the same results

As much as the media loves to shout about stories of wars and rumors of wars within the big two political parties the results always end the same.

The winners are and will always be the men and women who play within the system and the losers are and will always be those who find themselves on the outside

For every bill debated and eventually passed through Congress there is none more important than the one’s that support the efforts of the men and women who lay their lives on the line each and every day in service to the United States of America.

In an election season it’s easy to lose sight of this basic fact in favor of the push for social issues that will never win full support among the divided consensus of public opinion

Connecting the Dots

September 19th 2010 13:09
In a society obsessed with everything being bigger, faster and stronger it’s easy to lose sight of the missing pieces of the puzzle.

The pieces that would better explain why this lead to that and why some things never live up to their expectations

From the very first meeting of the Continental Congress to lay the groundwork for a nation built on freedoms to the latest flap about a Pastor’s plans to publicly burn the Quran we have and will always be a nation of Double Standards.

Double Standards in how we feel about the raw definition of freedom and the sacrifices that have to be made in order for American Citizens to maintain the rights they take for granted

When faced with disaster, decisions made at the turn of a dime are essential to saving lives and preventing a nightmare from turning into an epidemic.

For every natural disaster and element of destruction from human beings it is these decisions that frame the conversation surrounding the things that happened to save all the lives that could have been saved in the spur of the moment

To fill the quota of stories during an election cycle, major media is always ready to provide the American public with the next great movement.

Movements that are laced with the embodiment of change from the status quo and a new beginning that is “destined” to sweep across the nation

In the shadow of the day Americans from Sea to Shining Sea remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001 and those who gave all in protection of our homeland we are left with a moment to examine the basics.

The basics in our ability to come together in memory of the things that unite us as a country and the forces of division that are making these moments a rarity

The Cause for Children

September 10th 2010 14:01
In December of 2009 the Fredericksburg area was treated to the invention of a concept that would revolutionize fundraising and philanthropy. This concept was named the 15 Minutes of Fame Charity Show which was created to bring together elements of dance, comedy, song and entertainment to help raise money and awareness for worthy causes.

In September of 2010 I am proud to say that this concept is responsible for raising thousands of dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a Breast Cancer survivors fight against Bone Cancer and will now be used to help children fighting cancer

Somewhere hidden between the flashy headlines of approval or disapproval for the healthcare overhaul is an unspoken understanding among the American populous.

An understanding in the fact that the public isn’t being served with honest debate on an issue that will eventually affect the pocket books of a society that is already dealing with one of the worst economic crisis in world history

On the ninth anniversary of the worst attack on American Soil the American Public is still scrambling for answers. Answers to all the questions that still swirl around the day the world realized the safety net surrounding the continental United States was fictional.

September 11, 2001 was the day the conversation changed about our role in the world and how the impact of conflicts thousands of miles away from American shores affects our interests here at home

For every internet news post, article printed and topic tweeted about gains or losses for the DNC or RNC in a political election season the American Public loses a valuable chance to have a conversation.

A conversation that isn’t about the failure or success of continuing with the power of one party over another but is about the uniformity of anger among the populous directed at the failures of our elected officials from both sides of the aisle

The Price to Pay for the War’s we Wage

September 5th 2010 13:27
In the history of mankind there is no uglier word than “War.”

A word that evokes visions of destruction and loss to all those that hear it’s call but is thrown around without any mind when it comes placing it on the things we fear
