Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Great Oil Disaster and the Fallen Tree that Didn’t Make a Sound

May 23rd 2010 12:37
The story of mankind is a tale of progress, prosperity, disaster and the sheer will of the human race to make the best out of any situation.

In simple times, disaster was something that could be considered natural or the will of nature but the cost of living in a technological world is the reality of acknowledging the disasters created by human beings is the price of progress.

Disasters that change the course of global history and increase the already large footprint of mankind…

Unlike Global Warming, The Pig Flu or Y2K the impact of the crisis in the Gulf was immediately understood because we have been here before.

Drunken Drivers of Oil Tankers, Inefficient Standards of Production and a Lack of Oversight have always been the cause of these catastrophe’s but the decision is and has always been to play dumb and to move with slow reaction when disaster strikes.

Disaster is never easy for a society to deal with but a disaster of an avoidable nature is an even harder pill to swallow.

Like a kid who refuses to take his medicine we blind ourselves into believing that these are isolated incidents caused by a few rotten apples when the problem is a corrupt system where the rules aren’t being enforced and decisions are being made outside of the will of the American people.

For me, the question isn’t about drilling or not drilling but is about enforcing the safety standards that could have prevented the accident that happened in the Gulf Coast but will spread to Oceans throughout the world.

As Americans we always have a choice.

A choice to live our lives behind the colors of our political party or to open up our eyes, ears and minds to the BS that is destroying our world…

This is just one of many wake up calls that continue to confront us on the nightly news and in our daily lives.

The final solutions are up to each and every one of us as the decision of discovering new sources of energy is not strictly an American, British, Chinese, Russian or Australian issue.

What we need to do is open up the conversation to let our government officials understand what the citizens of their nations want to happen now and moving forward.

You might feel the same way as me or you may feel that making a nation independent of foreign sources of oil is more important than protecting the environment.

What I need is to hear what you have to say on the issue that affects each and every one of you and the Earth our children will have to live in.
