At The Movies Vol VI: The FanBoy/FanGirl Conversation and the Evolution of a Movie Phenomenon
April 14th 2010 14:52
In the evolution of the movie experience there is no greater phenomenon than the rise of the Fanboy/Fangirl film into mainstream conversation.
Once relegated as the obsession of fanatics living in their mom’s basement’s with a fleet of hovering spaceships overhead, first edition character costumes and encased mint condition action figures is now a socially acceptable phenomenon shared by children of all ages and adults with corporate muscle behind the cause.
Each and every person in the conversation has experience with a friend, neighbor, coworker or relative who are self proclaimed Fanboys or Fangirls for a film empire that began with a comic book, piece of literature or a simple idea.
A simple idea that elevated a film into cult status with a legion of loyal supporters who wait with baited breath to soak in the experience through the transformation of a film or book into something larger than life.
These are the reasons why fanship of a film, book or piece of literature can turn into the fanaticism that follows when year wait for the next piece of the journey can turn into a 20 year quest that culminates with years, months, weeks or days camping out to ensure that a seat is reserved at the midnight premiere.
For people who have never truly met a Fanboy or Fangirl it’s hard for their minds to grasp the concept of a film or series of films like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Twilight, Lord of the Rings or Star Trek evoking a fanatic response from the films alone.
To understand the phenomena is something more than simply critiquing a single film or a film series.
It is to grasp the feeling of reading a great piece of literature or watching an epic film and yearning for more knowledge to complete the puzzle.
The puzzle that drew the reader in and the quest to put the pieces together until it’s complete.
For some this completion is as simple as casually catching the next film in our local theater while others wrap the concepts of these films around themselves like a warm blanket.
For the fans that prefer the blanket we are proud to call ourselves true Fanboys and Fangirls for the movies that mean something more than words on a piece of paper or images that appear on a movie screen.
To be a Fanboy or Fangirl is to understand something the rest of us aren’t getting…
It’s to find meaning beyond the words on a movie script, have an understanding of the characters lives outside the things that are given to us in the film or in a book and to have a passion that is beyond anything that could be described in casual conversation or typed in a movie review.
It’s our experiences and the way we soak in movies that make them great and it is the Fanboy and Fangirl who have made these movies epic.
For the fans of this film genre these things radiate with a whiter light.
An experience we can all use every now and again when we watch these cult films through the eyes of a Fanboy or Fangirl.
