Re-Examining the Role of Experts in an Imperfect Society
September 13th 2009 14:55
From the beginning of time man has always relied on the expertise and knowledge of men and women who are labeled as experts on certain pieces of subject matter.
Adorned with degrees and life experience these guru’s have been bestowed with official titles that bring them closer to the status of noble men who can answer the questions of life’s mysteries.
In the field of science these figures hold a unique place in our society by answering questions that are difficult to understand before social dogma and rumor allows a society of extremes to run wild.
In the realm of politics and war a dangerous precedent has been set as the idea of a czar has evolved from a man of science to that of a royal figure who is appointed to high positions by our nation’s leaders to “know all” on subject matters that were never supposed to fall into square pegs.
Drug Czars, Energy Czars, Fitness Czar’s, Economic Czars and the rest of the list that compose the hundreds of figure heads who are supposed to be the easy solution to fixing life’s problems.
Men and women who have been appointed tax payer paid oppositions to say the things we already know and make snap decisions about the moral welfare of a diverse nation.
Appointed as Generals to lead the charge against invisible wars to eradicate problems that existed long before any colonists from Europe called the land known as North America home.
Wars that are pulling billions dollars from our national treasury while accumulating thousands of casualties from combat in overcrowded prisons across the nation.
The purpose of appointing a single all knowing being as an expert on a piece of subject matter is to find a solution to a certain problem that is plaguing society.
What was once part of the job description that went into our vetting process of deciding who should be elected as President of The United States of America has now become another piece of bureaucracy to be swept under the rug to simply say a national leader is doing something to fix the mess.
The problem of trying to find solutions to helping the hungry, impoverished, weak and uninsured Americans has been twisted into a Disney Parade without the conversation about balance that should take place with the American people and not a figure head who has been appointed as the “all knowing” leader on a certain piece of subject matter.
The problem of combating the scourge of addiction and death on the streets of America is an important issue that should be at the forefront of conversation in every American home as opposed to the hiring of another general who is only interested in fighting a war that has no beginning or end.
The problem within our government when the decisions are made to appoint subject matter guru’s instead of taking the non partisan argument to the American people to solve problems like the obesity epidemic, poverty, energy and the other onslaught of issues that are sitting piled on the desk of subject matter czar’s.
The whole idea of a Poverty Czar, Energy Czar or any other royal title placed on these appointed figures is within the fact that it subverts everything we should be doing to find real answers and solutions to societal problems.
Issues that affect every man, woman and child in this country are being wrapped up into partisan arguments with repackaged solutions from the not so distant past.
The not so distant past that said we need to revert back to the nostalgia of yesteryear by surrounding our President with the best, brightest and most experienced leaders if America was to ever regain her prosperity and morality.
The not so distant past that said experience and relying on what was already done is the only way to fix problems.
The not so distant past where it was assumed that terrorist attacks that occurred in foreign places would never reach American soil because of the money and power we put into our intelligence and defense networks.
The not so distant past where it was assumed that change would never come from Washington but that it had to come to Washington…
The story always has a way of changing but when we dig past the rhetoric, words of wisdom, double-speak and political wrangling what we have is the same dysfunctional roots that are rotting away into chaos and misunderstanding.
The game changed on us after 9/11 just as much as we are watching another piece of evolution in the way we live our daily lives by new means.
What we have in front of us in an opportunity for true change but this opportunity will never come to fruition until we re-examine the way the game has been played and how it is still continuing today.
