At The Movies Vol. I: An in Depth Look at the New Face of One of America’s Favorite Past Times
March 10th 2010 14:16
We’ve all felt the Shock and Awe that has come with the escalating price of a night out at the Movie Theater.
In the past decade a trend of escalating Ticket Prices has swept over what was once a time honored tradition in the United of America and the Rest of the World.
A time honored tradition that at one point and time came at the cost of 25 cents a ticket has now ballooned to a national average of $10.00 a ticket on a Friday or Saturday night.
With the escalation in the price of admission has also come a wave of new sights and sounds at our local movie theaters.
From the way our favorite and not so favorite movies are created to the comforts of lounge seats in a stadium theatre; the modern movie experience is a mixed bag of new mixed with the old.
New by way of technology that offers the audience of choice in the way we view our movies and new by way of the controversy that has been created surrounding the decision of spending a few extra dollars for an enhanced experience.
Once reserved for Museums and Amphitheatres the IMAX experience has now expanded to the Neighborhood Cineplex.
An advertised expansion that would lead the consumer to believe that the same legendary quality would now be available on a larger and more accessible scale...
As with most legends in modern culture, the story has played out into rumors and rumors of rumors as a steady war has been brewing into what is the true meaning of IMAX Technology and which venues are simply slapping a label on a conventional movie screen.
When the facts are laid out on the table what we are forced to face is the facts that surround the cost and practicality of a Full IMAX Projection and Full IMAX Screen which is required to get the Full Quality of an IMAX viewing.
A full quality that is missing in most conventional theatres as the original concepts are broadcast through Digital Projectors onto Smaller Screens…
The lack of public information on this issue has caused outrage and dismay not because of the lack of quality that has come with this move to expand the technology but because of the extra cost that comes with an IMAX viewing.
In most cases this cost is $4 - $5.00 over the national average of $10.00 for a regular movie admission.
Much like the current Blueray revolution with DVD’s IMAX is slowly becoming the new standard in Cinema as more and more theatres are converting there Cineplex’s to IMAX Digital.
Like it or not the conventional ticket price will continue to rise as the Theater Experience continues to scratch and claw itself away from the technologies we can get in our own homes.
For me, this has meant lowering my weekly attendance of movies into a once or twice a month adventure.
With limited adventure comes a demand for the best quality and experience possible.
Quality in the theater atmosphere, viewing and an understanding of the kind of technology I will be viewing my feature in.
The key to all of this is information.
Having it, knowing why you’re spending those extra dollars and being able to relax and enjoy the show.
What I have linked below is a most current listing of IMAX theatres in the United States of America.
For anyone questioning whether their local theater is IMAX or IMAX Digital this should clear up any confusion.
If I happen to find a more updated list I will be sure to post it in the comments section of this blog as time goes on.
