Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

A Conversation of Rights Part 1 of 3: An in Depth Look into the Gun Rights vs. Gun Control Debate

January 31st 2010 12:47
Before there can be any conversation about the hollow veil of transparency on Capitol Hill in the face of American anger there must be a conversation about the fundamentals.

The fundamentals that brought together a group of radical thinking revolutionaries that created the backbone of a nation built from the seeds of their dreams.

Dreams crafted from the frustration of colonization and what they considered unjust rule from a monarchy.

These founding fathers formed these ideals out of a sense of a rebellion towards what they saw as unjust practices and a lack of representation in the affairs of their daily lives.

It is these fundamentals that flow through the words in the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights that give each and every American citizen certain inalienable rights.

Rights that display their simplicity to the pursuit of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, Freedom of Religion, The Right to Bear Arms, The Right to Due Process, Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press…

It is these rights that make the United States of America a pillar of Freedom and land of opportunity but it is also these rights that have caused anger and strife as to understanding the balance between rights and protecting the publics greater good.

In today’s conversation we’re tackling the first of three issues in this conversation by way of breaking down the extremes in the Gun Rights vs. Gun Control Debate.

A debate that dates back to the very first moment European Settlers set foot on the soil that would one day become the United States of America and continues to this very day for every time a man or woman takes it upon themselves to abuse the rights granted to them in the documents that founded this great nation.

For every time we are forced to view the grisly scenes in the aftermath of tragedy a nation is forced to deal with the extreme emotions of searching for a way prevent another.

Emotions that evoke a gut wrenching call to action in search of peace for the greater good while the prospect of remembering why we have these rights is put on the back burner.

The back burner that remembers the fundamental right of every man and woman to protect his or her family from undue harm and the warnings of our forefathers which lead to establishment of these rights in the first place.

Rights penned to protect the people from government run amuck and outside forces that are looking to threaten American sovereignty.

One may argue that a modern America has no need for the paranoia that surrounded a young nation in the 1700’s but as the sands of time has tested the power of the Constitution and Bill of Rights these documents have withstood the test of time.

The test of time that now forces us to face the prospect of an already vast black market of drugs that has only grown larger with the passage of restrictive laws in the War on Drugs.

The test of time that has the United States of America in an invisible war against terror where the enemy does not wear a uniform, gives his marching orders behind closed doors, lives next door and has no regard as to whether his targets are military or civilian.

The test of time that gives us a view of an outside world where decisions are made based on power and not the voice of the people and how these outside forces would love nothing more than to extend their reach into the influences of a super power that stands for everything they are against.

It is for these reasons that we must look to all sides of the argument in search of real solutions.

Real solutions beyond pointing fingers and laughing at lifestyles we don’t understand or focusing on the radical side of the issue with men and women purchasing assault weapons in the name of sport.

Real solutions in maintaining the rights of citizens and putting the focus on breaking up black markets of illegal gun sales and keeping weapons out of the hands of felons and the mentally ill.

For every hot button issue there is a state of balance waiting to be found.

A state of balance that is lost when something as important as maintaining the right to a way of life and protecting our homes is transformed into a partisan argument about radicalizing the issue by way of banning all arms.

A ban that forgets all the original reasons why our forefathers took the time to include the Right to Bear Arms as as the Second Amendment and the reasons why any attempt to turn this notion into an antiquated argument has continuously failed.

It is our rights that make us uniquely American and it is the loss of these rights that cause us to lose our way.

It is our duty as Americans to have the conversation about preservation and moderation of these rights before we lose our way and our minds.

I'll start by saying that I don't own any type of firearm. I will defend the right for law abiding citizens who have gone through proper background checks to own guns. Laws or not, you won't prevent felons from getting guns. In my area, home invasions are on the rise along with car-jacking.

We live in a violent society and anyone can become a victim. Even 'safe' neighborhoods are targeted. Having guns legally should always be an option.

Amen to that.

Simply banning any substance or individual right does not eliminate the danger but only makes it worse.

Thanks for your input.
