No matter how thick the political turmoil or how dark the future may seem; it's still important for us to remember why the gifts that have been handed down from generation to generation are still a beautiful thing.
Gifts that came in the form of sacrifices made by men and women that stood up to oppression for the rights that many take for granted.
Gifts that were created when a group of men from different faiths, socio economic classes, belief sets and walks of life were able to come to a series of compromises in the creation of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and United States Constitution to form a nation that is still ruled by these documents 236 years later.
Gifts that have been defended by men and women that gave their lives, health and well being in defense of the United States of America throughout the course of her short history.
When it comes to paying tribute to the United States of America; the first things that come to mind are these gifts and the glue that has held it all together from the beginning.
What has made the United States of America one of the greatest nations in the history of the planet has very little to do with innovation, the creation of laws or the structure of government.
What's made this country great is the ability for us to make mistakes and make them right again.
It's this ability, that helped elevate society to truly honor the words written by a group of men ahead of their time and social circumstances.
The simplicity of "We hold these truths to be self evident that ALL men are created equal" found a way to transcend past the ugliness of slavery, the oppression of women and the stain left by the civil rights era without social upheaval or a second civil war.
Our ability to create change through the structure of the law and free elections is the thing that separates the United States of America from nations that have had hundreds of constitutions, multiple coup's and revolutions in the same time frame that the United States of America has been working under the laws of the United States Constitution.
Taking this day to honor the United States of America isn't giving a free pass to the work that still needs to be done.
Many men, women and children are still finding it difficult to have the same rights as other American citizens and the damage done by mistakes of the past is a scar we will never fully recover from.
As long as we learn from our past as a nation and strive to move forward, there is no reason why the United States of America won't be celebrating many more Independence days for the next 200 years.
My tribute to the United States of America comes with a strong appreciation for everything I have and the opportunities that stand in front of me because I live in a free nation.
"Freedom is not and will never be free."
To protect these rights we must begin to understand and take action against the things that are happening around us and in our government.
The United States of America began when the people decided they wanted independence, is meant to be governed by representatives that work for the people and must be taken back by the people if we are going to prosper.
