Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

At The Movies Vol. II: Alice in Wonderland and the Sweet Touch of Technology

March 17th 2010 13:22
In the history of creations, re-creations and re-imagining’s in modern cinema there is no greater scrutinized film than that of a re-done literary masterpiece.

We’ve seen it done over and over again with some films hitting the intended mark of authors who put pen to paper centuries before filming began while others fell flat before even hitting the cutting room floor.

In the case of Tim Burton’s 2010 hit Alice in Wonderland, the jury is still out as to whether or not this film met the lofty expectations of measuring up to the pop culture phenomenon created by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson’s novel written in 1865.

While we wait for this conversation what we can discuss is the way technology transformed a well known story into the stuff beyond our wildest imaginations.

Wildest imaginations as the viewer can now feel like they are in Wonderland along side Alice falling into the Rabbit Hole, having Tea with the Mad Hatter and walking into the Castles of the White and Red Queen.

A special treat for viewers as the mind of Tim Burton has teamed up with yet another Classic Fable in the creation of a new standard in Modern Cinema.

While it may be hard for some to get used to the goofy 3-D glasses those who did were able to take the next step in the evolution of classics with a modern day touch.

Classics that were once reserved for the imagination that comes from young minds in bedroom stories are now larger than life before our eyes as the story has now become about making characters colorful, bold and larger than life.

In terms of technological mastery, Tim Burton has topped himself in a genre where he already stood King but the true story in this movie has to come with a look into the modern portrayal of the characters we were already familiar with.

Names like the Mad Hatter, Alice, The White Queen, Tweetle Dee and Tweetle Dumb, The Red Queen and the Chestshire Cat were already known in modern conversation long before Tim Burton conceptualized a script for this 2010 film.

What I found amazing is how this movie was able to blend together our expectations of what we believed these characters should be with technology, a careful choice of the actors and voices portraying them while paying careful attention to the classic storyline.

In terms of saving the conversation of whether this remake of a classic honored the book; I feel Tim Burton’s film was an absolute masterpiece in terms of transforming this Classic Story with the use of Technology and Portrayal through the Characters.

A must see in 3-D or IMAX to get the maximum quality of this film and to relive the story that was once left only to our imaginations to visualize.

Really?

What were you expecting?

Was it story line issues?

Did you expect more effects?

Was it the acting?

I'm really curious on this one...

I didn't expect more effects. I think the artistic side of the movie was spot on.

The story line felt predictable and jumbled. Some of the actors performances were poor - I particularly didn't like Anne Hathaway as the white queen.

The movie felt a lot like Narnia. I just expected it to be more in depth and not so hollow. Although I haven't read the book, so perhaps he didn't have much to work with - how did the sleepy doormouse become so energetic and change gender?

Yeah, it's always the little things right?

I can definately agree with you on the points you brought up but there is still a huge part of me that has to appreciate the movie for everything it brought to the table production wise.

I wouldn't do anything crazy like call it the best movie ever made or the best Alice Re-Creation of all time but I still believe it's a landmark in movie production.
