The Re-Education of America
May 30th 2010 13:43
For every Revolution, Movement for Change or Great Societal Moment there comes a time for balance after victory is won. Balance in terms of a society evaluating the reason for upheaval and creating long term solutions for future prosperity.
Simple when written on a sheet of paper or analysed in discussion but much harder to apply to real life situations.
Real life situations that involve inconsistencies on the ground floor in matters of society dealing with gender equality, racism, religious tolerance and sexual orientation equality…
According to the Constitution of the United States of America each and every American has the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Within this broad statement also lies the fundamental right for every citizen to possess their own personal beliefs of racial and religious intolerance, chauvinism, homophobia and ignorance.
The clash in modern society is not from our individual right to these personal beliefs but is from the practice of these things in public arenas to infringe on the rights of others.
Workplace rights, being able to pursue educational endeavors, the pursuit of happiness through loving another human being no matter their race, religion gender or ethnicity and having the ability to enjoy all the other fruits of a free society.
It’s this spilling of our personal right to believe what we want to believe in our minds that is now leaking into the fundamentals of our education system.
The fundamentals of how we pass on the knowledge of our past to the next generation along with the history of our culture.
A culture that did not develop from Europe, Africa or Asia but was created from many twisted roads over the history of a diverse nation…
A diverse nation created by immigrants that has a story to tell about a culture that was created from many.
In our anger from the inefficiency of a Federal Government that has yet to address the problems of our own creation we have allowed a quiet storm to brew around our most precious resource.
While schools crumble, a quality education is replaced with the punching of bubbles on a standardized test and the eyes of the world are watching the fall of a great nation we are busy fighting the wrong fights.
The fight should be in finding a better way to create more opportunities for our youth instead of looking for ways to dig at each other.
A dig that will ultimately be the open grave of our own demise through cookie cutter versions of historical and cultural education intent on leaving out the past that is doomed to repeat itself.
