At the Movies Volume V: The Sports Movie Genre and the Effects felt Beyond the Screen
April 7th 2010 16:10
As the eyes of the World begin to see through the fading haze that was the 2010 NCAA Basketball tournament; I felt the time was right to have a conversation about a genre of movies that has had an influence on World Culture beyond the glare of the Movie Screen.
An influence that has translated into glimmers of inspiration for athletes, politicians and the average Joe or Jane with the spirit of anything being possible with hard work and perseverance…
It’s characters like Rocky Balboa, Rudie and Jake La Motta that continue to inspire nations across the world to cheer for the under dog in an escape from the stark realities of every day life.
A memorable sports movie will not only introduce its audience to what it takes to build a champion beyond the field of play but will also give them a sense of hope and warmth beyond the end result on a score board or the display of championship banners.
It is for these reasons that we look for stories like the ones we see in film through sporting events.
Stories of grit, perseverance and the will to win as we look for the spirit of these fictional characters in the faces of men and women caught up in the reality of money dominated marketplaces.
The reality of being let down with steroid scandals, foul play in the personal lives of sporting icons and stories that don’t always end as they were written.
In a world where reality sometimes takes the joy out of the perfect story, it is refreshing to know that we can pay our hard earned money in enjoyment of a film that tells the story of how it should be.
The story of an inner city youth who rose from poverty thanks to the kindness of strangers, who ultimately became family, in route to becoming an NFL Superstar.
The story of a down on his luck boxer without a penny to his name and only the grit never to quit receiving the opportunity of a lifetime and making the most of it.
The story of someone who was told they were too small to make the Notre Dame Football team that proved his cynics wrong with perseverance and love of the game.
These are just a few of the stories that fuel a culture built on making the impossible possible.
From the rise of the local politician to national prominence to the spirit that comes with always fighting for the little guy or gal…
Sports will always be a center piece of World society as we seek out the ultimate story book ending of two sides competing against one another and the best team, man or woman coming out on top.
The movies that tell this story will always be important as we pass on knowledge from generation to generation in the telling and retelling of the journey where anything is possible in sports and in life.
