From Left Field: Being Forced to Play the Game
May 18th 2011 11:41
As more and more candidates, would be candidates and potential candidates make their intentions to run for President of the United States of America known; the public continues to fall deeper and deeper into the most basic elements of the game.
A game that has very little to do with electing the best man or woman to serve the American people but has everything to do with a three ring circus representative of everything wrong with the way we elect our government officials.
Elections that have become more about hoisting up candidates on our shoulders based on how far they are on the left or right of an issue rather than taking the time to listen to the things that are in the big picture…
Every year, snap decisions are made by thousands of people across the country based on the religion, race, gender, political affiliation, national origin and sexual orientation of candidate’s for every office that have nothing to do with how they plan to change everything that is wrong with the office they are seeking to win.
For decades, there has been a call from within the structure of both major political parties to reform the election process, rein in spending, eliminate the deficit, pull back from wars on foreign shores and to promote a period of healing on Capitol Hill from the scars of war between the political parties but none of this has translated to actions after the oath of office is taken.
As children we are taught to honor our word no matter the reasons why our promises did not turn to action.
Even with this most basic trait instilled into each and every one of us we still allow our fears, sense of duty to a political party, race or gender blind us from taking our representatives to task for continuing to make the same mistakes over and over again.
While the argument could be made that one side is causing more problems than another to the detriment of the United States of America we must also admit that blame for continued problems must be passed on to each and every elected official serving in Congress and the Oval Office.
Any official elected by the people they serve is representative of their will in one way or another.
No matter the uproar over the influence of special interests, PAC’s, corporations or political parties the decisions of elected officials always have the ability to be taken to task in the election booth every November.
If the people choose not to vote, choose to close their ears to the ideas of candidates outside of their political party, choose not seek information from all sides of the issue to become informed citizens or choose to fall into the false belief that alternatives to the established powers do not exist they have chosen to allow the runaway train to continue to run off the tracks.
When we take an honest look at our foreign policy initiatives, the current state of the economy, the situation with our food supply, the destruction of the environment and the energy crisis that has everyone running scared what we will find is a wasteland of mistakes made by officials representative of the Democratic and Republican Parties.
Decisions that have been pointed out by many people “smarter” than the American public over and over again.
For all of the bravado wasted by keeping the conversation centralized to their political party base; not one of these so called experts took the time to focus on real solutions that will have to come from all sides of the spectrum as opposed to the power struggle that allowed the mess to happen in the first place.
A power struggle we are all aware of but choose not to acknowledge as a systemic problem.
Instead we choose to focus on elections we feel were rigged, tear down elected officials serving in office instead of promoting candidates with sensible ideas and fall into the trap of gutter politics that has everything to do with avoiding the real issues.
While Presidential Election 2012 may have the look of another battle built around the struggle between the “Big Two” parties as opposed to a process to elect the best man or woman for the job each and every American citizen has the opportunity to change the conversation.
The kind of change I’m talking about is the change that is possible inside each and every one of us when we take the time to see things for what they truly are and make the best possible decision based on information from all sides of the issue.
This is the only way the game will change because if we leave it up to the people pulling the puppet strings they will keep doing what they have been doing for decades by letting the show go on at all costs.
