Finding Meaning Beyond the Movement
October 9th 2011 13:30
With the emergence of another national movement created from the anger of American Citizens against the “status quo”; it’s become painfully obvious that the problems in the United States of America can no longer be limited to conversations about a single political party, race, religion, sexual orientation, origin, nationality, social movement or cause.
Much like the beginning stages of the modern Tea Party Movement, the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Suffrage, the Gay Rights Movement and American Revolution; the “Occupy Wall Street” movement has been boxed in, cast aside and forced into conversations that have very little to do with the reasons why American Citizens from all walks of life are fed up with a broken system.
An imperfect system that is broken because of the way we have chosen to live as a society through greed, fuzzy math and gluttony.
When it comes to understanding the reasons why people become angry enough to take to the streets of the Washington D.C., New York City, San Francisco or any of the thousands communities and cities across the United States of America we must first be willing to listen to the message before forming opinions along blue and red lines.
In the not so distant past, it was the modern Tea Party that took to the streets in anger over a debt crisis that was being ignored by Democratic and Republican controlled sessions of Congress and multiple men who had the honor of being elected President of the United States of America.
These men and women followed in the tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Susan B. Anthony and countless other pioneers to utilize their rights to free speech in an effort to change the direction of United States government policy.
For their hard word work, the eyes of a nation are now squarely on changing the direction of a free spending nation that was willing to ignore the 500 pound elephant in the room that was eventually going to swallow the United States of America even further into the abyss.
For all their efforts to benefit the future direction of their lives, the lives of their families and the future direction of the United States of America; nothing could be done to keep their message pure.
The kind of purity that comes from sticking to a simple issue and pushing for change on a large scale is a rarity in the modern world.
What happened to the modern Tea Party is the same thing that has happened to every simple call to action that becomes political.
The people with the loudest voices hijacked the movement on a national scale and changed the conversation into the same us vs. them dialogue that created the mess sitting in the laps of the American people.
A mess that is not only burdened by the astronomical debt built by leadership of both major political parties but also includes damage done by lack of oversight in a financial industry that continues to cause chaos and panic around the globe.
It was the modern Tea Party that spurred the federal government into action but it is also the perception of the modern Tea Party that is the reason why all the things that need to be done are not being placed on the table.
It’s the perception of racism, religious fundamentalism, lack of regard for the most basic concepts in the United States Constitution and the brash nature of the men and women with the loudest voice that have prevented a movement that shook the core of the status quo from becoming a national call to action bigger than both political parties.
Instead, the modern Tea Party movement has been boxed into a political corner unable to get its message to the people that need to hear it the most.
A message about something being fundamentally wrong with a government that is unwilling to listen to the men and women they were sworn to serve.
With the Occupy Wall Street movement the American people are being greeted with the same passion of the modern Tea Party movement.
The passion that comes from people willing to break from their daily routines for a cause that is bigger than anything going on in their daily lives.
From this passion, the truth about the things that have been happening in a financial industry and federal government run amok is finally reaching the mass audience that it needs to be delivered to.
Once the people stand up against the actions that caused the financial collapse instead of blindly praising “Rock Star” politicians for standing against the people they are told to be against we can begin moving forward as a country.
Forward as one nation and not a member of Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street Movement or any other cause that is only a splinter of the whole block of wood festering from within.
What we need to do is take the time to bring together all the pieces of the puzzle to form one big disturbing picture for everyone to see.
A picture of a nation with a trillion dollar and climbing debt, a banking industry that still has the power to regulate itself through a cozy relationship with the federal government, a system of elections that creates an atmosphere of compliance between elected officials and corporations in regard to public policy and government powers that continue to show a lack of regard for the needs of American Citizens when it comes to pampering entities that pump the most money into political campaigns.
In the not so distant past, men and women in power positions labeled groups that chose to speak out against the status quo of the time as communists, un-American, drug addicts and trouble makers.
The warriors of the Civil Rights and Women’s Suffrage movement fought through these labels to bring a nation together.
A nation that can now enjoy freedoms most citizens of the United States of America take for granted on a daily basis.
While the cause of the day may not be a social movement that will bring equal rights to a gender, race or social group; we come to understand that the stakes are much higher when we choose take a long hard look at the jobs crisis and the current fragile state of the nation.
It is up to us as individuals to grab hold of the opportunity to listen to the messages of the movements happening around us or to simply form snap judgments and let the chance for real change pass us by.
