Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Price of Balancing Compromise with a Political Game of Chicken

December 12th 2010 11:04
In an age ruled by the speed of information it should come as no surprise that headlines now serve as a replacement for the full story.

Full stories about the day a voting electorate has been eagerly waiting for, the fine line between full disclosure and the need to protect confidential information, the battle of wills to find a way to repeal the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy in the United States Military and the never ending game of chicken within both of the “Big Two” political parties that is putting political interests ahead of the general welfare of the American people.

Long before a Presidential candidate by the name of Barack Obama took center stage in the debate over reforming the way “Capitol Hill does business” there was an outcry among the American populous for elected representatives to find ways of working together for the greater good.

When it comes to issues concerning taxes, unemployment benefits, cutting spending and trying to get the economy back on the right path; bi-partisanship should be something that comes into the conversation long before the American people demand it.

In an age of extremes, the general idea of these things flow easily from the mouths of politicians in the months before Election Day but strike a different note in the day’s months and years after the oath of office is taken.

In a week that should be marked in the pages of history; elected representatives of the people from both sides of the aisle sat down for the purposes of striking a deal from both sides of the conversation but still found a way to miss the point.

The point that was made during an election season that was more about finding ways to curb the obscene amount of spending in the Federal Government as opposed to the ability of politicians from both sides of the aisle huddling in room to iron out bad compromises.

For the day the American people have been eagerly awaiting, what they have been greeted with is another Stimulus Package filled with goodies and excess that will add to the already over bloated federal deficit.

While some may point to this situation as a missed opportunity to show the World how compromise should work and others may argue that the President gave away too much in the deal; the heaviest points in this conversation rest with the fact that it all amounts to business as usual.

Business as usual in the way the message is clearly given to elected officials but is not transformed into any amount of action for the long term needs of the situation.

While accepting a compromise created by members from both of the political parties that control both houses of the United States Congress as an emergency response to a desperate situation is comfortable and easy; it’s another task to dig deeper into all the things in the legislation that were added on after the emergency measures to rally support.

Support from the peanut gallery who claimed the bill was too large for an electorate that demanded a cut in spending but changed their minds in support after having their interests tacked onto the package.

After decades of doing the same thing through spending like there’s no tomorrow and only being met with the dark realties of where these efforts have brought us as a nation; there has to come a point when at least one representative of the people stands up for the things they preach in times of convenience.

Until that time comes the American people will only be given the options of reading through the blurry lines of Double-Speak and playing the cards we are dealt from the bottom of the deck.
