Brisbane people to start drinking piss!
February 4th 2007 04:25
Its official! We here in Brisbane and the rest of south-east Queensland will be drinking recycled sewerage water by the end of 2008.
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie announced a proposed plebiscite on wether we wanted to drink it or not will now not go ahead.
Personally I have no issue with drinking it and cannot really see how people can get so hung up about it.
Water could be coming from anywhere. The water we take from the dams now is treated and the water sources have all sorts of nasties lurking in it be it cow bodies, chemicals , pollutants and all manner of piss and shit but you don’t here people worried about that .
Why? Because that’s what people have done for a long time and after a year or two of drinking recycled water there will be no resistance either.
The politics in this decision has been something to be seen though.
Firstly we had the Premier telling everyone that drinking recycled water would only come in an Armageddon type situation and re-assuring us we were a long way off that.
Only last week the State Water Commissioner denied there was any water crisis.
Then yesterday we have the premier talking about it being touch and go wether we will have the pipeline for the recycled water in place before we run out of drinking water
So just who has been kidding who?
Regardless though he is correct it is pretty obvious to anyone living in Brisbane at the moment that we are in the grip of a crippling drought and that we are running out of water.
It’s a fairly straight forward argument. As human beings and therefore members of this planet we owe it to the planet to look after it and to not squander the abundant resources we have.
Water is one if not our most precious resource. If we develop technology that allows us to maximise this resource safely then we should be obligated to use it wether we have full or empty dams.
We should not be so arrogant to waste the water that we crap into and then just flush away. If the ability is there to recycle and use it again we must.
Humans’ ability to consume and then just discard is becoming the scourge of the new century. In particular the developed western societies and the huge middle classes that are emerging in countries such as China and Indian need to face up to their responsibilities to those who have so little through out the rest of the world.
A trip to any waste or refuse dump in any of these developed countries would reveal to anyone just how much we use and then simply throw away.
If the thought of drinking recycle water leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths then maybe they should think about their own good luck of living in a society that has the ability to do this while others have only limited access to very meagre water supplies.
