Cause & Effect Of Definitions and Classifications In Our Two Party Political System
May 5th 2008 15:38
Today I would like the explore definitions and classifications and the different mediums that are defining voting patterns in this years and past Presidential Races.
Modern Election History has been a simple proscess of the big 2 parties choosing a canidate to represent their brand to take on another canidate to represent the other brand.
Branding was also simple as the Super Hero who wore the D on his chest stood up for the poor through social programs, fought against a racist society to bring a level playing field in the job market, made sure the little guy got a fair shake against "evil" corporations who stomped on workers and fattened executive board room pockets, saw no need for an oversized military because our country was to smart and strong to be attacked and sought to create an elevated tax system that saw the rich in the highest portion of the tax bracket in an elevated system of IRS taxation.
The super hero with the R on his chest stood proudly as a Patriotic American and Defender of the flag that was carried around the world as a beacon of Freedom. This defender believed in a theme of limited government putting more pressure on the states to make day to day decisions for citizens. Pulling national treasures together to have the strongest military possible with the latest technology to be ready for the day we were attacked. This brand was also built on the prinicpals of having the federal government stay away from individual freedoms. A common theme concoted by this group was that of God & Guns. Federal government should build no laws restrictiong the personal use of firearms and shall also not restrict open expression of religious beliefs.
With the lines drawn and an agreement by these two enities to have a yearly one on one battle that controls all 3 branches of government these ideals have split our electorate down the middle. A conversation that should include an infinite amnount of issues that concern American citizens on a daily basis has been deduced to issues of character and whether or not a political canidate will take away the individual freedoms that are guaranteed in our Coinstitution.
These Super Heros are built to be larger then life, put their lives on the line in an effort to lead this country on a national stage and have the powers to go without sleep. In the end these Titans all wear the same letters on their chest year after year and allso fight the same philosophical arguments our founders faced while putting together the documents that built this nation.
Instead of having the broad conflict discussion of issues like America's role in the world, World hunger and it's affects on the rise of Terrorism, Classism in this Country and Abroad, The Failed War On Drugs, Our Countries Riddled past and how it's affecting how we look at ourselves today, Our fractured Military System and the forgotten Veterans, Government Corruption, Our Broken Education System, Special Education, Disease Cures and research, Enviromentalism, How The FDA is Dropping the Ball on the Meat situation and so on and so on we choose to reduce the conversation into issues that will not fix the problems that is keeping our government from running properly.
With 2 out of three branches of our government within the 20% job approval rating margin something has to change within our system of Government and way of thinking. The day of the Democrat and Republican Political Czars choosing our Presidental contenders needs to come to extinction. Year after year our decision had been made for us before November has even rolled around. The parties are choosing their canidates based on fear, race, sex and class and these themes also follow this nomination proscess into the national election. Themes of the canidate who is looking to protect working class Americans from being invaded by a foreign nation, is willing to fight Congress to allow you to maintain your constitutional rights and to put money back in your pockets at whatever cost to the national bank account is winning the day over pragmatical thinking, reaching across the aisle and getting bills passed for the betterment of our nation. The poltical divisions in this nation are causing rifts that stand in the way of getting things done and is also blinding the American people.
In the end I'm hoping one of the three canidates, who will ultimately be our President, will do the simple task of answering the call our forfathers left for us of doing what's good for the American people and telling the people how it is whethere they want to hear it or not. Beyond the liberal and conservative labels our country has a problem of not getting things done or acting without fear of consequences. The answer isn't more social programs with mandated Health Care or to ignore the problem completely and let millions of children grow up uninsured nor is it to go into another world conflict blindly but it's about a better our way of thinking and choosing our representaives using our minds on the issues and not on the latest dirt or assumptions that play on our deepest fears.
My hope is to watch a fair and honest issue debate in my lifetime that is based on a legitimate argument between two canidates looking to express views of the American people on a national stage and not conforming to the issue of the day or the constituancy their in front of that week. When it comes down to it I understand that no canidate will ever be able to represent all my varied beliefs and views but my hope is to have a represenative I vote for to carry the beliefs I supported and to have the ability of compromise to stop and listen to represenatives from every corner of our nation and build the combined voice for every American who put those individuals into office. No political race should be about winning or losing or someone not getting what they want. Politcal races should be a demonstration of varied views on the issues that matter most to us and electing someone who can work with those who disagrees with their way of thinking and coming to a compromise.
It is not the duty of an elected official to fight bullheadly with other constituants but it is their job to get bills passed on behalf of the American people. On the same note the American people will have to look past voting with their race, sex and false beliefs of a governemnt that is looking to dishonor tenants that are in the constitution and legislation that has been denied or upheld by our Supreme Court and look to electing leaders that will go beyond the D or R on their chest and work for the people who put them into office. Personally I am still waiting for an Independent to be elected into the Oval Office to Clean up the Mess our Party system has made but until than my support will always go to the canidate that can see the big picture.
