Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Defense of Marriage

The more the world changes and appears to evolve with advancements in technology; there is still very little that can be said about the way human beings have grown as a species.

It may be heartwarming to look upon the way modern society has progressed from the dark periods of the not so distant past but there is still a lot of work to be done.

While racial, gender and religious discrimination will always remain black stains on the history of mankind; the problems of the modern age have more to do with finding a delicate balance in society as opposed to the simplicity that comes with breaking down walls.

A balance left open for interpretation by the forefathers of the United States of America when the decision was made to guarantee the inalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness for every American citizen while also protecting the rights for each and every citizen to practice whatever religion they saw fit.

Throughout the history of the United States of America the practice of religion has clashed with the moral compass of society.

When we take a serious look at the legal restrictions on polygamy, incest and the handling of snakes in some parts of the country it becomes hard to make the argument that the Constitution of the United States of America has been adhered to in the protection of every religious right.

What’s happened in the growth of the United States of America is the bending of religious protection to meet a certain situation or a societal need.

Once again, American citizens have found themselves at a crucial point in history where the rights of religion have crossed paths with the rights of individuals who choose to create a lifelong bond with someone of the same gender.

A point that will open up debate on host of other issues concerning religious restriction, the rights of individuals and the creation of a new societal standard in regard to religion, federal and state laws.

The problems that have come in conversations about Defense of Marriage and Homosexual Rights have had very little to do with a breakdown of societies moral compass, an attack on religious institutions or protecting the Civil Rights of homosexual couples and has had everything to do with making things equal under the rule of law.

Any government body that claims to protect the institution of marriage in an age where divorce rates have hit record levels, the idea of a nuclear family has gone by the wayside and a large number of married couples are choosing not to build families is doing so for their own selfish benefit and not for the good of society as a whole.

A society that is not structured on the tenants of any specific religion or moral compass but for the people that makes up its whole. The people of every race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, creed, socio economic class and political belief…

When any individual or group of individual makes the decision to move the direction of the United States of America based solely on their individual religious beliefs they are doing so against the framework of the United States Constitution.

Armed with these simple facts, some people in the conversation may find it easy to push for Gay Marriage through Federal legislation but doing so would open up an even deeper issue concerning the need for protection of religious institutions from persecution.

Beliefs that give religious institutions the right to marry or not marry couples based on their religious practices without interference from any local, state or federal government body.

If we are ever going to find a solution that protects each and every American Citizens right to practice or not practice whatever religion they see fit while also honoring the Constitution by giving each and every citizen the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness we must work together as a society instead of finding new reasons to fall apart.

When we choose to find reasons to not allow things to happen or work against our better judgment to take away the rights of others we all fail equally in reaching the end game.

The endgame our forefathers set in place for us centuries earlier by creating a framework that lasted the test of time.

It is up to each and every one of us to help make it work for us in the present and to preserve these rights for future generations.
