Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Defining History & Moving Forward As A Nation

November 5th 2008 16:42
All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression...

~Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the United States

As we sit on the doorstep of the day our forefathers envisioned when they wrote the documents that defined our Independence, it is important for us to remember the actual words in these documents that allowed this moment to happen.

Words written by great men of foresight who envisioned a nation capable of progressing past the chaotic times in which the Constitution and Declaration of Independence were written.

I am writing this and not a mandate on the newly blue Congress and Oval Office because it is important for each and every American of varying political beliefs, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and creed to soak in the next few months leading to inauguration day to relish where we are as a nation and where we came from.

In order for us to define where we truly are as a nation…

We all have to come into this inauguration with a spirit of togetherness and historical significance. The bitterness of the last 2 years are typical when passions are riled on either side of the aisle and always falls hardest when hearts are broken in a political climate that is defined by winners and losers but we can't use our political bruises and celebrations as weapons against each other.

There is a time and place to tackle the issue of Balance of Power and how we want our new Governmental regime to reflect our personal values as Americans and this time will come only after we go through the process of healing as a nation.

In the spirit of humility John McCain laid the path for Republicans to follow in his concession speech as he urged his party to stand behind an Obama presidency and to not let bitterness to continue to define us. Barack Obama did much of the same as he returned to his pre nomination swagger offering to work for both sides of the aisle.

The usual post election words of comradeship were exactly what this nation needed in this moment after the most partisan election in my life time but these words also have to be followed by action through our members of Congress whose seats were secure in this election cycle.

Let us not be fooled by cheap gas as a reason for not continuing the fight to end our foreign oil addiction, confusing a change of parties in the Oval office as the solution for all of our problems as a nation and lets not misconstrue the will of the American people to step outside of the box and radically change our leadership as a mandate for Liberal ideology being the only solution for our countries massive amount of problems.

The spirit of this nation has and always will be structured around compromise.

This is why our forefathers built a three tiered system of Government philosophically structured to maintain a system of checks and balances. Any party or person who distorts this American movement as a call of dominance for one party or the other should not be in a position of leadership…

This American movement that has lead us to this moment in history was not a Democratic mandate of dominance nor was it a shot at the Republican Party or George W. Bush but rather it was simply Americans from coast to coast rising up and asking our leadership to not rule by a Blue or Red Fist but to simply do what we elect them for.

Be a steward of the Constitution and spend everyday not working for your Party, Special Interests or the issues that divide us but rather work towards practical solutions for our nation's greatest problems for the betterment of our nation and her people.
