Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Giving the People “What they Asked For”

November 21st 2010 13:33
All across America there is a sense of calm mixed with a twist of panic and fear as the people wait for their elected representatives on Capitol Hill to deliver the things they asked for.

Things that began as a whisper and elevated into a loud chorus for reform in the way the federal government opens up its check book and enacts laws that affect all Americans and not just the ones that elected one side or the other into office.

For this delivery of the promises that were made during election season; the American public is slowly starting to realize that they may not be ready to pay the price of admission that comes with the change that is needed in the total body of the Federal Government.

Change that comes in the form of cutting practices that have been abused but have also been a useful tool for Congressmen and Congresswomen to “bring home” funds to fix roads, schools and help with other concerns in their home states that may not have been addressed in standalone legislation.

Change that comes when the tough decisions have to be made in the form of cutting jobs, funding and pay of federal workers and the military during one of the worst economic crisis’s in world history.

Change that comes when compromises have to be made on both sides of the aisle to the determent of funding the projects we hold dear to our hearts because the purse strings are now being held tight to the vest of the federal government.

While standing tall against the pay of our elected representatives, bail outs and the corruption that comes when “roads to nowhere” are allowed to be tacked onto Congressional legislation sounds easy when we’re rallying for government reform; there is a price to pay when real change comes to our door steps.

The kind of change we’re witnessing in this new session of Congress has nothing to do with partisanship, the things that happened when the super majority had control of the legislation on Capitol Hill nor does it have anything to do with the backroom rumors that have followed the Tea party around for the past two years.

The change that is sweeping across Capitol Hill came from the people, is being enacted by representatives of the people and will ultimately help get America back to the places she needs to be.

While it may be easy to continue lumping the representatives that began rolling the ball down the hill as “outside of the mainstream” or “extreme” it is also important for each and every American citizen to remember that it’s not the wild ideas that become law but it is the elements of these ideas that have created some of the greatest bi-partisan reforms in American history.

In an age where headlines about joblessness have become common place and the federal government has become drunk with corruption, power and influence from agents outside of the people who elect them into office; the only way America is going to climb out of the mess she has found herself in is by embracing ideas from every voice in America.

From these voices we will discover the best solutions for bringing down the national debt, re-invigorating the engine that makes America run in the businesses that call her home, discovering bi-partisan solutions to either make health care work in realistic terms or to eliminate it all together and finding a way to hold corporations responsible for their actions before enacting billion dollar food recall’s, having to clean up in the aftermath of oil tanker explosions and dealing with the consequences that come when millions of people mysteriously get sick from their drinking water.

While this could be a shining moment where a movement that began on the streets of America, much like the original Tea Party, brings together men and women from all sides of the political spectrum in the name of reform; the American people must continue to keep their eyes, ears and minds open to the bulls that are waiting in the shadows.

The bulls that are poised to run loose in the name of disruption, confusion and gridlock to keep legislation aimed at fixing a mess that has been slowly building for decades from being fixed.

A mess with fingerprints from both of the “Big Two” political parties all over it as we continue to look for reform with the same characters that caused the destruction.

Destruction that can only be fixed when the American people decide that enough is enough and makes the ultimate decision to support the bigger picture rather than glitz and glamour of partisan images.
