Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Election “09”, Terror on the Streets and the Never Ending Merry Go Round Game of Perception

November 8th 2009 14:12
In a week where the American people let their voices be heard through direct action, as opposed to the filter of a spin doctor, we have also been faced with the blow of tragedy.

Tragedy from the dishonor of a soldier who took an oath to protect his country from enemies both foreign and domestic and killed his fellow warriors and countrymen in an act of domestic terror.

Tragedy from one of our own, an American citizen, who decided it was more important to stretch the limits of the freedoms we hold dear as Americans than to have regard for the sanctity of human life.

With every unexplainable action that befalls us in the face of tragedy we are left with questions.

Questions that stem from trying to understand how things like these acts of of terror can happen on the streets of America and how we can prevent tragedies like these from happening again.

Through this process, a story of action and missed action begins…

The action of an individual taking to the streets in an act of violence against their fellow man, woman or child and the missed action of preventing tragedy...

If there is one consistency in our society, it has to be the story of actions happening and everybody in the room having a different interpretation for explaining why these things happened.

In examining the story behind the week that was, we must begin with an election that was to serve as a check and balance on all the things we were told that happened one short year ago.

Leading up to the pivotal moments of Election “09” that “gave us” all the answers to our questions, the mood of the “people in the know” was based on the premise that the sky’s opened up in a wave of change with the election of our first president of African Descent in 2008.

An election that was said to open the gates to a “Post Race” America as a country once known for enslaving and discriminating against a race of people finally elected a person from this race as the leader of the free world.

It was said that a sweeping electoral victory that encompassed 54% of the popular vote served as a mandate on the Republican Fiscal and Social Agenda and the Presdency of George W. Bush.

A fiscal agenda that was in decline and reprieve, through borrowed money, long before George Herbert Walker Bush, William Jefferson Clinton or George Walker Bush took the oath to serve as President of the United States of America.

A mandate that gave the Democratic left what they felt was absolute power through all three branches of government and what they also felt was their right to bypass the measures of “radical” bi partisanship that was promised in campaign speeches leading up to the Democratic National Committee which nominated President Barrack Obama to go head to head with the Republican Nominee John McCain in the National Election for the American Presidency.

These were the stories that created the aftermath of "Election “08” ; The Congressional and Presidential Election results from last year solidified these points to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi when pushing forward with their partisan agendas.

Close to a year has gone by with partisan agendas based on the premise of “I’m Right and You’re Wrong” being shoved down the throats the of the American people and the opposition with the reasoning of victories from Election “08” and insults of obstructionism being thrown in the face of anyone who would dare stand up to the party agenda.

What happened Tuesday November 3, 2009 was a chance for the American people to stand up and speak for themselves before having the opportunity for direct action in 2010 through Senate and Congressional Elections.

Direct action that will come in one short year when the powers or partisanship will have to put their jobs on the line against their words…

Words that spun a tale of speaking for an American electorate who was sick of the same old politics and wanted true change.

True change that would bring politicians to the table of understanding during a time of crisis rather than the same war room with a purple line separating one faction from the other.

For our efforts to achieve change in Washington the only accomplishment we have gotten for our energy and enthusiasm is more of the same.

The same bickering, the same partisanship and the same merry go round.

The merry go round that will begin to spin violently from a knee jerk reaction to the yearly cycle of blood on the streets of America, as we are forced to come face to face with the realities of having an open and free society where every American has the right to protect their homes and participate in sport with guns while still having the impossible socieal task of keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable and criminals.

To this there are no easy answers except for the ones that come from the people whose job it is to spin fact into fiction.

The fiction of a radical agenda to either ban guns outright or to open up the markets event more.

The fiction of tall tale’s that spun a historic moment that should have been celebrated by every American into a political agenda.

The fiction of tall tale’s that tell the story of nearly half of America being backwards and away from the norm for not jumping on the bandwagon that differed from their personal political beliefs of smaller government and fiscal responsibility.

Elections seasons are meant to be a time of celebration where Americans of every background, gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation can listen to the issues that affect their personal lives and vote on the candidate they feel could be the best leader.

In an age of Reality TV and Two Party Politics we have reached a radical point in our society where we are being asked to make decisions out of fits of anger, pageant politics and anything but the issues that stand in front of us.

Issues of how best to protect the American people from dangers both home and abroad, issues of getting Americans back to work again and building a sustainable future for our economy, issues about taking real steps to ensure safety in the food we eat, issues of honoring the reasons why the American people take advantage of their inalienable rights to be a part of the electoral process and issues concerning how best to find a delicate balance that works for all Americans instead of the sifting majority.

The mystical idea of “The Norm”, “Majority” or “Normalcy” never ceases to amaze me because this is an ever changing ideal.

An ideal used by politicians to rope us into conforming to their specific agenda in an “us versus them” fashion.

If there is one undeniable truth that came from Election “09” that shines through the argument of “off year” elections being based on local issues and not mandates on the national agenda, it is within the fact that independents have once again proven to be the deciding factor.

The deciding factor of an election process that has evolved into a circus of extremes...

With this fact on the table it gives this Radical Independent a sense of hope for our politicians to get the message and apply the will of the American people towards the wave of true change on all levels of government.

True change beyond campaign speeeches, campaign promises and rhetoric.
