Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

From Left Field: Extreme Expectations

June 22nd 2011 09:00
In the history of mankind there has been no greater threat to the survival of the human race than the use of extremes to replace the sweetness of simplicity.

The kind of simplicity that comes from common sense approaches has been replaced by the use of extreme language and bravado in a world where it’s becoming harder and harder for individuals to have their voices heard.

Voices that have been bundled into groups of social expectations of how we should think, walk, talk and act out against the many injustices that exist in the world.

It is this extreme process of thinking in assumptions that has propelled many to move past listening to the things that are being said in their neighborhoods and communities about major issues hidden from mainstream media coverage.

Issues that affect the health and well being of every man, woman and child on the planet.

When it comes to the issues that should be the top priority of every system of governance around the globe we have dropped the ball as a race of people.

A ball that has been passed down from generation to generation in spite of whatever social turmoil consumed the planet with the ultimate truth being that we will always be one world society that will either survive together or be destroyed together.

When it comes to issues concerning discrimination, societal injustice and the hindrance of opportunity we have become a vigilant society in protection of our fellow man.

While this may not have been the case throughout the course of human history this has happened only because of knowledge been passed down from members of society forced to live through the darkest periods of human evolution.

Dark periods when unimaginable things were done to human beings by other human beings because some members of society allowed themselves to believe that specific groups of people were not of the same race because of their skin color, religious belief, gender, nationality, origin, creed or sexual orientation.

While ignorance isn’t something that will ever be wiped clean from the planet the scars of the things that were done and are still being done haunt each and every one of us.

They haunt us in a manner that has shaped the way many people have chosen to live their lives in fear of wars and rumors of wars that have influenced the progression of society.

A progression where the dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Susan B Anthony have been realized in most nations across the globe in the form educational and career opportunities being available to men and women of every race that choose to take advantage of the fruits that exist in countries that offer them equally.

With these dreams of opportunity realized problems still persist on a grand scale.

Problems of fear and paranoia that have driven many to live lives of assumption and misunderstanding to the things that are happening on the other side of the fence.

Polarization in the political spectrum is a direct reflection of the polarization that exists in modern society.

A polarization that has allowed the men and women hoisted to hero status, for their ability to say all the things we want to hear, and the political parties they represent to lead by reputation instead of action.

The labels they have placed on themselves as fighters for the people and champions for the common man have become nothing more than the slogans on bumper stickers of the candidates that fade away long after Election Day.

Through the promises and failures of the men and women elected to represent the people of the United States of America we have become an angry, cynical and complacent society.

Instead of turning to the men and women we chose to support our anger turns to the people that have the courage to say the things that need to be said because it is too painful to admit that the problem is not with one man, woman or political party but is with the failure of an entire system.

Before there can be any talk of fixing the deficit, getting Americans back to work again, finding answers in the food crisis, eliminating hunger, homelessness, cancer or childhood obesity we must take an honest look at the problems that exist at the core and not just the ones that sit on the surface.

It is our ability to blow up into extremes instead of taking the time to dig to the core of the issue that is causing the destruction of the planet and the human race.

It is our duty as members of the human race to use the gifts that were uniquely given to us as a species to solve the problems we have created for ourselves instead fo fighting each other.

If we continue to use extreme’s as a source of creating more problems for ourselves the only conclusion that will come is an ending that no one will benefit from.
