Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

2009 Year in Review and a Farewell to the Year of “Change” that Ended with More of the Same

December 27th 2009 15:46
If there is one term to sum up the year of 2009 in a short phrase it would have to begin and end with the word irrationality.

Lost in a haze from the failures of past administrations and left to face an uncertain future with the promises of streets paved in gold; The American people began the year in a delusional craze with the fear and joy of what the year 2009 would bring.

Delusions of a socialistic nation ruled by an iron fist met head to head with delusions of the grandeur that absolute power will bring.

When the smoke cleared what we were left with is the same old story…

The story where we are always given visions of joy and fear but end up with more of the same.

More of the same partisanship and bickering with a story that ends with the same conclusions.

Conclusions that begin and end with the belief that power is the only way to solve some of the greatest problems in the world and compromise is simply an art based in naivety.

Naivety to believe that the words written in the speeches of Barrack Obama during Election “08” could be a possibility in the “real world”.

Naivety to believe that bi-partisan health care legislation could be formulated and passed to help American families care for their children without forcing bills through the legislature to simply earn political points and keep campaign promises.

Naivety to believe that there are two sides to every argument without castigating calls of racism and ignorance when oppostiion is brought up to the policies of a President who broke one of the highest glass ceilings the United States of America has ever known.

The year of 2009 brought out our worst fears, suspicions and conspiracy theories together in a year long rendezvous with history and reality.

Arguments that sounded simple when applied to the anger towards the Bush Administration aren’t as easy to talk about when left on the shoulders of a President mired in history.

As much as certain people in society would like to stop having the conversation to preserve the legacy of President Obama the task of keeping the wheels of discussion and analysis going is bigger than any historical marker.

The conversation about the actions of government is more important than any chosen political candidate who is foretold to bring “morality” back to the White House and it is certainly bigger than any Illinois Senator who has been chosen to bring an end the “tyranny” of a rogue Presidential regime.

No matter who sits in the Oval Office; we will always have forces in the world that oppress the weak, have visions of destroying their neighbors over religious and or societal views and will have to deal with the sins of our forefathers in trying to fix the environment and in bridging the historical damage caused on our society in matters of race and gender.

These are the facts beyond the catchphrases and are also the reasons why we come to this place.

This place where we can have rational conversations about the missteps of government outside of political parties while also laying the facts on the table concerning the issues of Abortion, War, Gun Control and role of Religion in modern society…

This place where we can openly discuss issues concerning the divorce epidemic, race, gender, sexual orientation and the invisible walls we segregate ourselves with.

This place that allows for open political and social discussion beyond pointed fingers and double speak in search for new conversations with open minds and hearts for real solutions.

Real solutions beyond the one’s that take place with every majority take over of Congress that is based around the premise of “We won and you Lost” which always ends in a backlash and the same merry go round that will continue until our political leaders get it.

Getting it isn’t about a spin doctor creating the next “anti candidate” who will carefully craft everything we want to hear about destroying the theory of red states and blue states to win the Independent Vote or framing a partisan candidate in the cloth of someone looking to tear down the two party system.

Getting it is about putting action behind the words in reaching across the aisle when the time comes to create long lasting solutions that will work for the benefit of all Americans as opposed to the political and social aspirations of the few.

In the year of 2010 it is my sincere hope and goal to continue to bring out these conversations from the Radical Middle.

The Radical Middle that will have its voice heard in November of 2010 when decisions are made based on the current actions of our political leaders as opposed to the carefully crafted words that dance around visions of fear and promises of a better tomorrow.

The damage has been done and tomorrow is now…

When we break down the state of our nation and world, we have been and will always be left with the same answers.

Answers of realizing that solution’s from extremes and one sided arguments never work in the long run.

The long run that we need to place our visions on as opposed to simply waiting for the next big thing and building up candidates to heights they will never achieve after taking the oath of office.
