Understanding the Real Tragedy Behind the Terror
February 6th 2011 12:17
In a world where black & white answers are expected to come from complex situations; it’s no wonder that we have lost the ability to come to any real conclusions.
Real conclusions about why tragedies continue to happen in the name of religion, politics, race, national origin, gender and for other reasons that have been twisted and turned in the minds of radicals looking to push agendas of divisiveness and rage.
For each and every tragedy perpetrated by a radical who felt that they could use warped beliefs as an excuse to bring violence onto another human being there is a void that is left in the aftermath of the destruction.
A void that is filled with a brief feeling of togetherness and harmony but is later turned into a dark tide of pointed fingers, rumor, innuendo, false accusations and inflated bravado.
The real issue with the 9/11 attacks, the assassination attempt on Representative Gabrielle Giffords and other tragedies carried out by individuals or groups in the name of religion or political ideals has more to do with the reaction of a society in its aftermath than it does with the intent of the action.
Instead of dealing with the fact that there are men and women living amongst us who worship the same religions, work the same jobs, support the same political candidates, share the same nationality, sexual orientation and race; we paint a picture of blame towards anyone or anything different than what we believe ourselves to be.
The belief that outsiders are plotting and planning harm on the things we hold dear to our hearts is easier to cope with than the dark hole of anonymity that spear heads the panic and fear of simple solutions in blaming an entire religion for the attacks on the World Trade Center and extreme speech for the assassination attempt on a United States Congressional Representative.
For all the advancements in the way modern society is able to access information and gather facts we have still not grasped the ability to understand the lessons that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Lessons about the things that happen when a society rushes to judgment against things that are bigger than the warped views of mad men and women bent on injecting suspicion, panic and fear in the population that will last long after punishment has been served for their actions.
If we took the time to look deeper into the word “terrorist” what we will find is something more than a catch phrase to try and explain the seriousness of the situation…
The true meaning of the word terrorist has more to do with the goals and objectives of the action as opposed the negative connotation of the word.
Goals and objectives of causing disruption and panic among a mass populous of people who share the same beliefs of the man or woman looking to cause terror as well as those who the terrorist believes is against his or her agenda.
For every time the opportunity to bring a society together in the face of terror is used as a tool of division against an entire religion, political ideal, race, gender or lifestyle we further the cause of the person looking to cause terror.
In an age of extremes that has fostered the notions of political discourse, religious harmony and civility as impossibilities it has become more difficult for world citizens to see past the headlines of now.
If we take the time to step back and look at tragedy as an opportunity to re-examine the things that are important in life what we would see is a world where our differences can be something that is celebrated as opposed to a source of strife.
Strife of our own creation because society refuses to take the extra time to break down complex issues into the simplicity of understanding that it is the intent of terrorists and mad men to keep us divided.
It is our division that that enhances their cause and it is our division that is the measure of whether their campaigns of terror are a success or victory.
