Finding Progress In A Backwards Society

"Like a man who has worn eyeglasses so long that he forgets he has them on, we forget that the world looks to us the way it does because we have become used to seeing it that way through a particular set of lenses."

In order for one to understand the point we have reached as a society through progress, one must take a look inward to truly grasp what we have become.
When I took that breath inward, held it and finally exhaled… what my eyes relayed back to me was a technologically advanced society that still held onto archaic forms of thought.
These forms of thought and structure were the ground work that allowed us to give our corporations an "any means necessary" business plan where they could whimsically destroy our Earth, not look out for their common man and add poison to our food supply in the name of progress.
Our leaders elected by and for the people sat back and threw down brew skies with the lobbyists from these companies as they laced their homes, pocket books, wallets and went on vacations with the kick backs bought and sold with our Electoral and Congressional votes.
A rational person might ask where our "watchdogs" were when all this went down but to that I would simply have to reply that are watchdogs simply became trained by the same master our government groveled to and that master goes by the name of greed…
As dividends grew corporate moguls from all walks of life began buying and consolidating all forms of media as they pressured and bought our government leaders into forming the FCC which structured laws that made it next to impossible for a "common man" to have his voice heard without going through the corporate process.
After spending years trying to process how a country could grow and progress into doing so many great things in science and thought but on the same token still harbor so much animosity amongst its people I almost always came back to the same conclusion each and every time…
Our problems are not from some genetic birth defect implanted by our forefathers from an "oversight" or from a failed compromise but are from the people of our nation continuing to do the same thing over and over again in thought and practice.
We are a nation of extremes and can't grasp the concept of someone having a different opinion opposed to what we're personally bringing to the table. For most Americans it's either all or nothing in our beliefs, lifestyle, politics and rationale.
Those who don't completely stay on one side of the fence are brushed aside as being ineffective leaders and this shines through in our political two party system. The problem with black and white politics is that the little things are always left off the table as the winners of the bloody battles are left trying to prove how red or blue they are in order to please their party elders.
The goal of our politicians should not be in pleasing their party elders but should be in doing what's right for the American people. When a canidate is forced to do 180's in changing his or her stance ..ion, gun control, religion or defending how they will represent their race, issues like the absolute failure of our public school system, homelessness, research for the cures of Cancer and AIDS, diplomatic policy and the safety of the food we eat aren't being addressed.
To me it's more important that we get a leader who will actually stand up to a meat industry who is cutting corners in the standard of the food we eat in the treatment of animals, steroid & hormone injections and supporting illegal immigration as opposed to watching the media try to define what their niche view of "post-racial" America is.
It's the same arguments we eat up year after year when we define who our hero's, villains and celebrities on Capitol Hill are and rally our hopes, fears and dreams on the shoulders of the leaders we elect.
Things like the price of oil are clearly out of the control of our national leaders but we still continuously lay the blame of our discomfort at their feet instead of doing what we personally know is right for the Earth and our wallets by purchasing fuel efficient vehicles.
The answers we're looking for to make our society a better place is and has always been right in front of our faces. It's within us and has always been their but it will take bold steps for us to finally get their as a society and simply electing the first African American President doesn't mean our work is done.
The door for our country to do this didn't magically appear in the year 2008. It takes the right man or woman at the right time to break glass ceilings, just as it would to elect any leader from any religion, race, sex, socioeconomic background or sexual orientation.
I write these blogs to say the things the media won't say and to stand up for the average American who is tired of the BS we're fed on a daily basis. In doing so I'm a fan of any person who is looking to lead our nation without fanning the flames of division and is also willing to see the things that bring us together rather than the things that tear us apart.
It's only when we rally around a political thought solely based on the structure of right and wrong rather than the beauty of a nation that can possess diversity from sea to shining sea that we curve away from the road our forefathers paved for us in the writing of the Constitution…
