The Entitled Generation
June 12th 2011 12:05
A generation that grew up without the threat of social or physical conflict from war has now been entrusted with what some would consider the impossible task of fixing the messes of those who came before.
A task that asks a generation centuries removed from the turmoil caused from a global slave trade and centuries of oppression to somehow come up with solutions that will change the world.
With heavy expectations, the generation that was supposed to be the change the world needed followed in the footsteps of those who came before through a similar education system while also gaining important life lessons through tragedy in the form of 9/11, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan along with the lifting of the veil on backroom deals made at their expense.
When it was realized that the words written in text books about men and women that changed broken systems, the beauty of freedom and the power of the people could all slip away…
The generation that was given everything and gave nothing began to find their voice.
A voice that spoke out against retaliation for the attacks on 9/11, a rush to war in Iraq, injustices being done by world organizations that effect natural resources, food and foreign policy initiatives along with a powerful sense of organized activism for the men, women, children and defenseless animals that have no voice.
From the expectation that was placed on an entire generation to fix the wrongs of those who came before came a direct answer through millions of voices demanding change to the way things are being done.
In the year 2008 one could say that all of these voices converged in a violent reaction to a nation that was spinning out of control.
A spiral that ultimately lead to the destruction and absorption of once powerful companies that were household names in their respective industries.
With the fall of these giants also came the destruction of small businesses that had to absorb the painful costs that came with a drop in consumer spending and the hobbling of an economy that is now barely treading water on the weight of its own debt.
If there is one thing that will wake up a generation that was raised to consume as opposed to taking time to ask the questions that need to be asked.
That thing would be adversity.
The adversity that comes from being face to face with our own mortality in the form of an economic crisis that is coming dangerously close to being the worst in world history and the very real possibility of the next wave being the final crushing blow.
From all of these effects came the powerful force of anger.
Anger that has been harnessed by both sides of the political spectrum for the gain of the big two political parties.
A society that has been spoiled with the vision of streets paved with gold is now being forced to make very real decision about the future direction of their nation without any tangible choices that will lead the people in the right direction.
While politicians from the Republican and Democratic party work to posture themselves on opposite sides of the spectrum the only things we have achieved over the past 50 years is the same results no matter which group is in charge of deciding the future direction of the United States of America.
The same objectives for war against other nations, drugs, alcohol and for influence over the conversation have been fought from both sides of the aisle with disastrous results.
When ideas fail, the blame is used to divide the public. Blame that is passed onto public figures not because of the failed policy but because of tactics used to incite anger based on our individual religious beliefs, support of individual freedom, gender, race, sexual orientation, jobs or socio economic standing.
We have become a society divided along a great Red and Blue divide that has left many of the staunchest supporters from the left and right forgetting the basic principles of their political parties.
Principles that should be less about what we are told representatives from the other side of the aisle are going to do to take away the things we hold dear to our hearts and should be more about what the man or woman we choose to support is going to do to help America get back on her feet again.
For all the work that has been done to awaken the generation that once believed that the world “owed them something” just as much damage has been done by squandering all of our energy on campaigns that have no end game.
Campaigns that ultimately drive the cattle in a perfect circle through more broken promises, double speak and the support of hidden agendas.
If the past four years proved anything it would have to include the fact that proving things built up to be impossible as possible is an easy task compared to making the self sacrifice towards taking real measures to affect change.
If change were easy the world would not be in the mess it is in the today with the daily creation of new diseases, daily disappearance of animal species from the planet and the rise of more and more annual powerful storms.
Change begins with the decisions each and every one of us make on a daily basis but it is up to us as individuals to not give into glitz and glamour of what the media powers and political parties tell us will change the world and to be the change we want to see in the world.
