The Freedom of Choice
January 2nd 2011 11:02
For all the freedoms that exist in a society built on the principles contained in the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights there is also a conversation about the dwindling freedom of choice in modern society.
A conversation that isn’t as simple as pointing fingers at a single source or asking one side to stand up against another but is rooted in asking each and every world citizen to look deeper at the systems that have been built around us.
Systems that involve the things needed for every human being to survive, the evolving ways we communicate and gain information, the lives our children and children’s children will live long after we have left this planet and the role government plays in our daily lives.
All the things that cause panic and unrest in society ultimately come back to the fundamentals of every world citizen wanting to have the power of choice in their daily lives.
When the framers put aside their different religious beliefs, political affiliations and views of the world to lay the building blocks for what would later become the Constitution and Bill of Rights these fundamentals became the foundation of a future imperfect union.
Fundamentals that are now being twisted and turned in a system that is bigger and more powerful than any movement within the Republican or Democratic Party.
When we take a serious look at the problems in modern society and the reasons why the same cycles continue over and over again a constant image continues to appear.
An image of a broken system that involves groups with louder voices than “the people” in the halls of Congress and a society that is content fighting invisible monsters created by pied pipers paid top dollar to keep things the way they are.
On the brink of a revolution of the mind; the American people embraced the idea of wholesale change on Capitol Hill in 2008 and made their voices heard again in 2010.
The word change can be put into a sentence to mean many things.
Among these many things is the radical idea of doing things differently than they were done before, promoting policies to prevent disasters like a catastrophic Oil Spill or Economic Collapse from happening again and putting a focus on things that should be taken care of rather than the things that a political party needs to be taken care of.
While it may be easy to look at the actions of representatives as decisions made for the greater good of the country it is also important for us to connect the dots into a mosaic of cause and effect to the decline of society.
A decline that began to take shape in the United States of America when a the line between a simple system designed to represent the interests of the people was crossed by the big money of campaign donations, lobbying groups, political action committees and loss of common sense.
Among the victims of this breach is the sanity of the American public as we twist and turn for answers with pointed fingers at the party we feel is not representing our interests when the real culprit has always been a lack of realistic choice.
The choice between two political parties with their hands stuck in the cookie jar by supporting and passing legislation that benefits the millions of dollars pumped into annual election year battles framed in us vs. them politics rather than honest debate about the root of the issue.
The root of the issue that comes with the tough questions about the passage of Campaign Finance Reform and the damage that is being caused for every year it is championed in election year pledges and buried when it comes time for action.
For every time a politician in the Republican or Democratic Party stands up and says that he or she is fighting for the people we must question this pledge.
A pledge laced with the money of Oil Companies paying top dollar to further loosen regulations that will prevent the next disaster.
A pledge laced with money from a food lobby looking to further loosen the standards of what is “Organic” or the standards for what food groups appear on the government nutrition pyramid used in public schools.
A pledge that begins with a promise to the people but is not upheld after the oath of office is taken and political party obligation becomes primary.
Much like the word change, choice also has multiple meanings within meanings in modern society.
While we are free to vote for whomever we choose to in the election booth and have the ability to run for office in whatever political affiliation we see fit the name of the game has everything to do with money and keeping up with the big pockets of the major parties.
The game that is less about giving the people a set of realistic choices and is more about keeping the status quo.
The status quo the people are clearly weary of when seeing the affects it has had on the planet, the daily lives of our fellow citizens caught in the disaster of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and the dangers that are to come.
For the next three weeks we will be breaking down the three categories that are most affected by a lack of choice in the modern age of politics.
Three categories that dig into systems run amok and the future consequences that are to come if the people of the World remain willing to follow the beat of the drummer in a war between political parties rather than opening their eyes to a system that is all the same.
The first of these categories will be an in depth look into the Role of Privacy and Information in a Modern Society of Extreme’s which will be posted Saturday January, 8 2011 which will be followed by a conversation about the Evolution of the American Dream on Sunday January 16, 2011 and the role of Choice on Environmental Issues on Sunday January 23, 2011.
