Looking Forward to the Future of an Imperfect Union
November 2nd 2010 10:56
A story is told every election year.
Whether it is a story surrounding all the expectations we place on our elected officials to keep the promises that are sure to be broken, continuance of the status quo, or fear of what is to come from the changes that are guaranteed to happen it is still the same record that plays on repeat from November to November.
A record that doesn’t skip a beat for a well placed campaign for change, the anger of a tea party, a promise to America, the fire and brimstone of a rally to restore America nor does it change routine for a rally to restore sanity.
The hoopla surrounding the conversation leading into an election season may change from year to year but the fundamental questions that need to be answered by our elected representatives will always remain the same until something is done about it.
The questions surrounding how government on all levels need to refocus on re-building a broken public school system, the need for the federal government to protect the general welfare of constituents from the interests of corporations that have found a voice larger than the people in the halls of capitol hill, the need for the federal government to make a serious effort in getting Americans back to work again instead of focusing on cooked numbers that allow us to blind ourselves from the true face of unemployment and all the reasons why the new session of Congress has to do whatever it takes to serve the people rather than focusing on the pettiness and division between the big two political parties.
No matter the outcome of the election numbers tonight the real results will remain the same…
The new face of the conversation will be a litmus test on what his group of men and women are willing to do for their citizens when the time comes for them to run for re-election and the American people will be left with the same state of confusion in one year’s time.
The state of confusion that comes when we put all of our focus on the influence or lack thereof in the public figures we see on TV, partisan rallies and political parties rather than focusing on the merit each individual candidate will bring to the office they are running for.
The merit that comes with the first question each and every public servant should be asking themselves before filling out the forms to run for public office.
The question of whether they intend to seek a term of office to serve the public need or if they are running for their own self interests or the interests of a movement or a political party.
Too often we get wrapped up in the story of the day and forget these fundamentals.
A Tea Party will not prevent the next oil disaster, scandal or corporate bail out just as much a campaign for change is not the answer to fixing the divisiveness and petty nature that comes with the toxic environment on Capitol Hill.
To achieve these things we need to be smarter constituents by having our elected officials serve us instead of the cycle that has played itself out where the people have been serving them.
Serving them with lowered expectations and feeding the fires they set with raised pitch forks of blind anger at anything that symbolizes the things we are told to be against.
Change only comes when we look deep inside of ourselves and realize the problem comes from within. It is not up to the political parties to change the system they created but it is up to the American public to change the way it thinks and approaches answers to the tough questions.
