Reactionary Politics and the Distortions that Confuse the Simplicity of Cause and Effect

In a week that brought harsh realties back to the forefront of conversation there has never been a better time to bring it all into perspective.
A perspective that has been muddied, damaged and thrown on the backburner in favor of easy answers and bad calculations. Calculations based more on numbers and approval ratings than the consequences that come with getting our hands dirty.
Dirty with a natural resource that has been the cause of wars, source of greed and the life blood of a nation in need of rehabilitation from a dangerous addiction.
An addiction that clouds our eyes from the facts on the table and causes panic from all sides of the conversation.
Facts that give us a historical picture of the things that will and have happened whenever a business enterprise becomes more concerned about corporate bottom lines than our duty as human beings to take care of the planet.
While it is the duty of these companies to operate their business enterprises under the letter of the law there is also something to be said about the flexibility of the law in a land where government and money intermingle into a dangerous marriage.
A marriage where political campaigns created by spin doctors can influence a populous to believe that three words are the answer to all of our problems.
As proven this week with the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill wreaking havoc on a delicate eco system, there are no easy answers to any complex problem.
Something as precious as the natural resources on the Continental United States and the animals we share it with can not be put in the hands of companies that continue to prove their disregard for our planet under the oversight of a government that has favored easy answers for the people who keep them employed.
While mindlessly chanting “Drill Baby Drill” may serve as a band aid on a problem that requires a tourniquet it still gets us no closer to fixing situations that have already grown out of control.
If anything this “fix” is only causing more problems in the overall issue that is bigger than any single American, European, African, Australian, Arctic or African interest.
Going into Election “08” the two controlling parties were clear to the split sides of the issue.
One side said they wanted to open up more resources to lessen American dependence on foreign oil while the other side said they were fighting to protect further damage to an already embattled landscape and environment.
After two years of back and forth arguments, politicians going back on their word and proposals of compromise we are left with nothing but the most vivid reminder possible of the things we have to lose when we get it wrong.
Getting it wrong is something more than the Democratic or Republican party looking bad and is most certainly more than continuing on the same addictive path that has lead us into a religious war created centuries before the idea of freedom was ever conceptualized.
The way we can truly get it wrong is if we continue to accept distortions, reactions and diversions from the issues of the day as facts and wake up to a destroyed nation where we have lost it all.
The stakes are too high for three word chants or to simply say no on a complex issue that affects every single United States Citizen and our brethren across the planet.
There has to come a point and time where we openly look at all the facts surrounding the dangers that come with extended drilling in the face while also having the courage to admit the reasons for self preservation and discovering new sources of energy.
Real solutions that will not be the answers to ultimately guide us away from the dangers of our own creation but will serve as some type of escape from arguments reserved for people who profit from our confusion.
