There is a lot that happens around the world we cannot control. We cannot stop earthquakes, we cannot prevent droughts, and we cannot prevent all conflict, but when we know where the hungry, the homeless and the sick exist, then we can help.

In time’s of economic uncertainty it’s easy for us to crawl into our shells of comfortability and blind ourselves to the changing world around us but there will always be a place deep inside each and every one of us that is scratching and clawing to help.
Clawing to help the down on their luck citizen who has fallen on hard times and is need a helping a hand from their fellow man.
Clawing to help someone’s mother, father, sister, brother or family friend who became a victim of an economic crisis that has swept the globe leaving millions without homes or a way of life.
Clawing to help the disabled veteran who was forgotten after returning from service to country or another real life story of tragedy and triumph that exists within our homeless community.
As a child of the 80’s I remember having the blind mentality of a strong separation between middle class lifestyle in the American dream of suburbia and the long hard road to homelessness and poverty that existed in places my young eyes had never scene before.
For most Americans this was a reality that existed in our beliefs through the structure of a strong middle class but in recent years these realities have crumbled along with the fundamentals of our economy.
The reality that exists in today’s society is set within the fact that 7 out of 10 Americans are 1 paycheck away from becoming homeless.
With this reality it is more important now than ever for us to reach out to our fellow, man woman and child in these times of crisis.
Times of crisis that are testing us…
Testing us to go beyond our lesser instincts of crawling within our shells to shield ourselves from the problems of the outside world.
There are heroes in every local community who have made it their mission to help fellow citizens who are hungry and with out homes but they need your support to take care of each and every person in need.
Help could be as simple as donating canned food items to your local food bank or homeless shelter.
These items that cost less than a dollar could be invaluable to putting food into the bellies of men, women and children who haven't had a meal for days, weeks or months.
It’s the simple things that will carry us through economic times of uncertainty and they have to come from the compassion, strength and perseverance of the human spirit.
If there’s one thing we should take away from the re-discovery of the human spirit through tragedy it’s within the fact that when everything is gone we are only left with the basics.
The basics of love, compassion and family are things that go beyond money and material items that society may tell us that we need to achieve happiness.
It is our duty to share these things and expand the concept of family to our human family by helping those in need when the challenge presents itself.
There is no greater challenge than digging past the headlines of unemployment numbers sky rocketing at a record pace and foreclosures still spreading like a virus from sea to shining sea.
When we truly punch the numbers in and understand the answers to the equation we will have a sharp understanding that the numbers of those in need are growing by the day as the middle disappears in this country.
The reality is stunning but we should not let fear of our personal situation diminish the need to help those who are reaching out for our compassion now.
The cause of helping the homeless should never be a forgotten part of our duty as a society no matter how daunting of a task it may seem when looking at the entire gamut of the issue.
It’s too simple of a task for us to do nothing as the problem continues to grow with every increase in the unemployment index.
It’s only when we become desensitized and let the numbers on the nightly news remain as numbers instead of having the understanding that these things are happening to people in our country and the realities are right here at our back doors.
Realities that will hit home when it’s your brother, sister, mother, father, acquaintance or friend that will need a helping hand from the compassion of their fellow Americans and the hearts and minds of these members of the human race reach back with the helping hand of hope to lift them up from despair.
