Honoring Veterans and the Men and Women who continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces
November 11th 2010 13:23
It’s the simplest words in the English language that carry the most impact from what is said or isn’t said.
Words like thank you and sorry carry meaning not because of how Webster defines them in the dictionary but because of the symbolism that stands behind the words.
On this day of gratitude for the service of men and women in the United States Armed Forces, in defense of the United States Constitution, it is expected that every American from sea to shining sea, in the states outside of the continental United States and citizens living abroad pay homage to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for the freedoms we hold so dear to our hearts and to continue supporting the men and women in service.
While it may have become easy to focus on the politics that come with war and the decisions that may prove controversial; it is the gift of service given to every American citizen that we honor on days like Veterans Day and Memorial Day along with the standing force that separates a society that thrives on the ideals of freedom, equality, every citizen being represented in government, justice and the ability of every American man, woman and child to be anything they want to be from the horror stories that are happening in other parts of the world where rape, oppression, genocide, separation from government decisions and impoverishment are a daily reality.
It is the honor that comes with the decision made by men and women every day to sign a piece of paper and take an oath of service to their country and the United States Constitution that should be held in the highest regard.
An oath that comes with the price of leaving loved ones behind and possibly paying the ultimate price to answer the call of a nation that is and will always be in need of men and women to defend her from enemies both foreign and domestic.
While the trials and tribulations of modern times may confuse the things that this decision truly means by misdirecting the logic of some to believe that these modern day warriors are only doing their jobs or are fighting for something other than the principles the United States of America was founded on it is their willingness to serve that must be respected.
A willingness to stand up for their country no matter the political squabbles on Capitol Hill or social controversy that may be happening among the populous.
A willingness to march into battle in defense of their brothers and sisters in arms and an American populous who they may have to lay their lives on the line for.
War is among the ugliest words in the dictionary but as long as there remains forces in the world that thrive on power and taking away the liberty of others we must support the members of the United States Armed Forces who are willing to stand up in defense of the principles founded by our forefathers to serve as a shining example of freedom, liberty and democracy.
Without the Armed Forces of the United States of America we would have never had the opportunity as a society to show the world the heights a society could reach through its imperfections.
In celebrating the courage, honor and valor of the Armed Forces we are not only celebrating the lives of the men and women who gave all for the people of the United States of America and the United States of Constitution nor are we only celebrating the decision of service for country made by the men and women of the armed forces.
What we are celebrating is everything we have achieved as a nation and things we are still achieving because of the sacrifices made, service of the men and women in uniform and a nation who supports their efforts.
Achievements in the diversity of a nation that has gone through growing pains but always finds a way to get it right in the long run.
While paying homage to the service of United States Armed Forces Members may be confined to two federal holidays in a calendar year; our respect for their service should be equal to everything they are doing for us on a daily basis.
The respect of keeping them in our hearts no matter if they are doing their daily jobs stateside, deployed, in combat, retired, shipping off to training or are awaiting further instruction.
It is the oath of service that ties every member of the armed forces together and this should be the single point of gratitude that each and every American gives to all service members past, present and future.
