Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Industrialized Meat Industry & A Sickened World

May 23rd 2008 15:56
From the beginning of time human beings have always formed societies by a means of hunting and gathering. In elder times it was as simple as leaving your cave and hunting the largest animal that would feed yourself and your family for strategic amounts of time.

As we evolved as a race tools were invented along with the advent of fire. Fire and the advent of tools for hunting reshaped the landscape and the relations we had with the animals we share our planet with. It was at this point where hunts were no longer a struggle between two animals but rather animals became an expected commodity on our daily diet. So much so that Humans began hunting in packs to bring down the largest animals like Wooly Mammoths and Sabre Tooth Tigers with their hides and teeth becoming part of daily culture. Fire and the invention of tools lenghtened human life spans and allowed us to keep warm and eat all parts of the animal without reprucussions from ingesting uncooked fecal matter or bacteria from wild animals.

Our history is riddled with stories of hunting, gathering and what it takes to be a mans man who can bring home the fruits of the land and raise his family. As we have evolved the story has remained the same but with different means of doing so. The actual hunt has turned into earning money in a monetary system the only tool to do this is our minds or actual tools created from inventors.

These differences in how we gather our food include the domestication of species for the soul purpose of eliminating the hunting and gathering society. In the beginning the theory was simple and needed. Building great societies meant having a dependancy within the community. In order to ensure commodities would never run out animals were domesticated to create a system of reproduction that would carry on from generation to generation. This simple system remains the same in some parts of the world without the sophistications of genetic perfection, steroids and an overblown system that runs on corporate greed rather than the needs of society.

Every sophisticated society is having the same problem of a population that is being sickened by an unregulated industry that has grown too large and is running amuck on corporate greed. No amount of government control can curb the amount of meat that is needed to feed a society that wants it's food quick and in a vast amount.

The Fast Food Industry is an easy target for the state the world meat industry is in today. Overcrowded Chicken coups filled with birds who are the product of hundreds of years of select breeding lay proof to the depths an industry will go to increase yearly dividends. These birds who were lucky enough to be selected to live know no other life but to exist in crowded cages while they wait for their execution. No longer grazing in herds with a hope or plan in life the very same Bovines that are celebrated as gentle creatures either have a life as milk maiden who is artificially inseminated over and over again to give birth to calves protected from all outside influences for the veal industry or are kept in assembly line like pens to await a death sentence.

While these stories are sad and the treatment of these animals who end up on our dinner plates is in humane across the board this is not the source of the problem. The problem comes after these animals are slaughtered and we leave our health and well being in the hands of untrained workers who are probabaly in this country illegaly to ensure our children aren't getting sick. The very same corporations who created the "happy meal" are also taking short cuts in cutting the meat in an effort to get the food product in your hands as quickly as possible. Intestinal tracks are slashed allowing the E-Coli to spread through out the meat and the only thing these companies can tell us is to cook the meat longer.....

Is there any wonder why it was perfectly acceptable to eat a Raw Hamburger 20 years ago and why now we are having outbreaks from fully cooked meat every month? The fact is the meat is bad and the FDA and our corporations responsible for our safety don't plan to do anything about it. One of the reasons why I always championed state's rights is for the simple reason that when you have Federal Agencicies in charge of something as simple as making sure corporations are doing the right thing they almost always drop the ball.

The FDA is broken and I wish it was simple as me sitting here and warning people not to eat meat. Most farms are multi functional and an Animal Farm doing the wrong thing next door to a Vegetable Farm will most always spread their filth into that horizon. As long as these problems of the mistreatment of the animals we eat continue it will almost always spread into mistreatment of the consumer. The problem of these corporations need to cut cost superceding their basic human duty to care about their fellow man is the root of the issue. I'm just hoping the problem will stop being swept under the rug by our media but my fear is it will take something drastic for this to happen and our government to take action....
