Howard Stays Hard as Bush Considers Blowing
December 7th 2006 14:09
John Howard has continued to stick hard to the “stay the course line” in Iraq while U.S. president George Bush considers blowing the war and getting out while he still can.
In the wake of the release of the Iraq Study Group report and the comments of new elected defence secretary Dr. Bob Gates that the U.S. is not winning in Iraq it seems everyone except the Australian federal Government believes that it is time for a rethink on current strategies to resolve the situation in Iraq. Even George Bush no long uses the term “staying the course”. As the Bush administration comes to realise that Iraq was a mistake conceived on a lie and attempted with no long term strategy and as the body count continues to mount for U.S. troops (just short of 3000 now) the U.S is desperate to get its troops out of there.
Howard who has fortunately not had any troops lost to the war in combat (no thanks to him but a testimony to Australian troops preparedness mixed with some good luck) continues to maintain a steadfast belief that we are their till the Iraq situation is resolved. One can only feel that he is awaiting riding instructions from his buddy George Bush who is under so much pressure in the U.S. that he appears too forgotten all about us.
Bush is not the only one who has forgotten that we have been playing a role in Iraq. If anyone would care to look at the Report by the Iraq Study group and the link to it appears earlier in this post you will at the end of it find a long list of people who were consulted in the drafting of the document. There is no end of ambassadors of countries (e.g. Denmark, Britain, Turkey), U.S. military and government officials both serving and former, Prime Ministers (e.g. Italy, Britain and Denmark) as well as others such as journalists but no where is it to be found any Australian consulted and in fact a search of the word Australia in the reports turns up a big fat zero.
If this is the sum of our importance just what are we doing there exposing our troops to the enormous dangers and risks that exist there? Answer Howard’s blind allegiance to George Bush who has taken him along for the sucker he is.
Howard will be judged harshly by history as will those who lead many into a war based on a lie and with no justification.
The time has come to act as an independent country and to tell Bush and the U.S. that we no longer wish to be part of their lies and their lousy war which has only served to inflict suffering on the innocent and draw the world in to a far more dangerous situation then we ever where before 9/11.
