Labor now a ship with a Rudder!
December 5th 2006 11:36
Kevin Rudd’s successful challenge over the hapless Kym Beazley is the very first step in a long process that he must undertake if he is to be any chance of beating Labor's nemesis John Howard.
Once considered the best thing Labor had going for it Howard now has had the Labor Party at its wits end in determining away to defeat him.
The early signs are already a concern as the so called "Dream Team" of Rudd/Gillard hit the media circus. Firstly who ever decided to give them the tag of "Dream Team" needs to be slapped round the head. I know of no one who has mentioned dreaming of a Labor leadership combination in any form and if you give the public a tag such as this there is an expectation that follows. Dream team needs to be left to sporting teams that contain the absolute best of players in a particular field. Politicians no matter how good they are invariably fail in providing us with a standard that high. Politics is about confronting people often with hard decisions that may be in the best interest of the public but not always what the public wants.
Drop the clichés Kev! Since he began this challenge Kevin Rudd has been pouring forth with clichéd sayings. “We got bucket fulls of this", "fork in the road" and "bridge to far" a just a few examples he has used. he may feel this is some kind of common touch he is using here clichés only serve to grate on a public well and truly weary of the clichés we hear from politicians , sporting stars and the media alike. Smart one liners and clever commentary is way more appealing.
It’s good to see though that his deputy and running mate can actually speak. Gilliard has been almost sewed to his side seemingly mute. Though some have said she looks a bit like the ventriloquist master with his hand up his back and her lips hardly moving. Her performances in the media today have been very good.
Most importantly Rudd has to take on Labor caucus and have a win. if as is being reported today he opts for only three new backbenchers to fill the Beazley and the non 2007 election starters then this will be a very bad look. While he should not be in the game of exacting retribution on opponents of his he needs to stamp some sort of authority and that would be resolved by kicking a few non-performers of his front bench. It’s not like it's hard to find non-performers on there. Failure to do this will be viewed by the public as just another Labor Leader beholden to the factions. Factions have placed Labor in the position it is in today by producing Labor machine clones who spend their whole waking life trying to maintain their pre-selection and obeying their factional/Union masters. Many of who got it so wrong by supporting Beazley.
The next few weeks will be an interesting time to watch Rudd attempt to stamp the Rudd brand in the hearts and minds of the public.
