From Left Field: “Making a Difference”
June 8th 2011 13:01
In a world ruled by extremes and obstacles that appear to be un-movable it’s become far too easy for the majority of civilization to sit on their hands and think they are making a difference.
All my life I have had to deal with stereotypes.
Whether it was racial expectations of how I should walk, talk or act because of the color of my skin, societal expectations of my role as man or the lack of expectations because of my age each of these stereotypes helped to fuel the fighting spirit that exists within me today.
It is this fighting spirit that is lacking among the majority of society.
A spirit discussed in history books when it comes to conversations about the pain caused during the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Suffrage and the dark period of the global slave trade but for many none of this is translatable to the dangerous things that are happening in the world today.
Because most people in the world feel that they have their personal freedom to worship whatever religion they see fit, speak out against government policies they do not agree with and the inalienable right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness with the illusion of streets paved with gold and rosebuds lining every sidewalk; the dark decisions being made behind closed doors are overshadowed.
Decisions that affect the health and welfare of global communities, the ability of the average man or woman to have the opportunity to protect their children from the sicknesses in our food supply and the systems of misinformation that are suppressing the truth from getting out to the general public.
At the center of every revolution across the globe was the battle for information.
Information withheld by force in societies where power is gained and maintained with an iron fist as opposed to the structure of democratic societies where power is given to government by and for the people…
When bad decisions are made in a democratic society it is expected that the people would work towards a solution to correct an obvious wrong as was done in the matter of striking down the doctrine of Separate but Equal and adding an amendment to the United States Constitution to ensure that the rights of every American are protected and equal no matter their gender, race, ethnicity, religion or creed.
While there are still many battles to be fought to ensure equal rights for every American there is still the problem of a system run amok with the power of money, greed and an unspoken code of silence among the media powers that continue to run scared from opening up the conversation to the world public.
Through decades of agreements between nations behind closed doors a collusion was agreed to in the creation of measures that are detrimental to the world population concerning the water we drink, food we eat, pollution and destruction of the Earth and suppression of third world nations that have had a destructive affect on the world economy and the health of every human being on the planet.
These things were allowed to happen because the same systems that were given freedom from government interference in the United States Constitution became a part of the broken system.
A system that fueled Print and Broadcast mediums with billions of dollars in advertising revenue that became the lifeblood of the beast called mainstream media.
In the 21st century we have begun to witness a loosening of the stranglehold of these empires with the power of the internet and social media taking the place of what was once the only sources of information the public had access to in television, radio and print media.
With this change, information is now more accessible and the voices of anger to the things that have been happening over the past 50 years have become louder and louder.
While the reasons to be angry are clear, the people who understand the dangerous place our world is at have not found a way to move from the rants of anger to the action of making a difference in a world gone wrong.
A difference that begins with the simple action of believing that the impossible can become possible and facing the fight instead of cowering in fear to the Goliath of the modern age.
It’s only when we stand up to the impossible that we begin to see the possible.
Too many times, my generation has been labeled as an angry but not willing to do anything.
While it warms my heart to see that men and women from my generation are breaking the biggest news stories around the globe in an effort to fill the gaps left from the dyeing print and broadcast mediums that refuse to adapt to the changing world it also has me impatiently waiting for someone to take that next step.
The step that will bring together nations, politcal parties, religions, genders, races, people of different sexual orientations and every open minded individual that falls in between for the purpose of reforming the way we have allowed our elected leaders to dictate terms for the destruction of the planet and failing health of the human race.
The day when all of this becomes a real possibility is coming soon but it is up to the people that want REAL change to recognize the moment when it happens and to support the cause instead of calling it naive, foolish or impossible.
