Obama Campaign Blew It (LINK)
August 23rd 2008 06:14
The plan to announce their vice presidential selection via text message was one of the all-time great political strategy decisions. Obama's team masterfully milked all the attention they could get from the media. But they waited too long to make the announcement.
Assuming Joe Biden is the pick, they blew a golden opportunity to be the first campaign in history to cut the mainstream media middle man out of their vice presidential announcement.
Having their pick revealed to the world with a text message sent out to supporters and the media would have driven home Obama's message: This campaign is about YOU. Learning who the next Vice President of the United States was going to be directly from the campaign would have made millions of supporters feel empowered.
Hearing from CNN Obama will pick Joe Biden is going to make millions of supporters feel disappointed, because they were promised they would be part of something novel and exciting.
Perhaps the Obama campaign began to believe the hype that they truly were leak-proof. They nearly were, but when so many people not directly involved with the campaign become aware of the pick, such as VP contenders and their staffs, the campaign cannot directly control leaks. Not to mention the logistics of getting the VP candidate to a rally without anyone noticing.
The announcement should have come Thursday or Friday morning, when speculation had peaked at an uber-frenzy and before police, secret service and family members began coalescing at Joe Biden's house.
Look, this is not a huge deal. Having the VP selection leak out is not going to prevent universal health care, worsen global warming or delay an end to the Iraq War. But, it's an opportunity lost and a crack in the armor of what has so far been a nearly perfect campaign operation.
