Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

From Left Field: Problems of the 21st Century

July 13th 2011 10:40
Over the course of human history each and every landmark achieved by the human race has lead us this point.

A point where information is no longer a commodity controlled by the powers that be, a point where freedom is no longer a concept reserved for the wealthy and the idea of equality among every race, socio-economic class, gender, religious or non religious belief and sexual orientation is closer to becoming a reality than in any generation that came before.

While these are things that we have to be grateful for in modern society missteps have created bigger issues that dwarf any achievements that have brought modern society to any utopian plateaus.

For all the work that has been done to tear down the walls that divide us just as much work has been done to construct invisible walls in the way we approach politics, define culture and learn to live with each other in world society.

Walls that have been constructed on the principles of breaking down complex conversations into simple yes and no answers…

The yes and no answers that shape the expectations of what we believe a human being or group of human beings to be based on the societal expectations that have been built up on how they are supposed to walk, talk, think or form opinions.

What was as simple as calling on society to move beyond the idea of stereotypes has become cultural and social warfare involving religion, race, gender, sexual orientation and whatever other ammunition spinsters choose to use in an effort to get their clients elected.

Instead of discussing the core issues of jobs, safety and the economy every November; local and national elections have become nothing more than beauty contests that have very little to do with the failures of accountability that occur in the days, months and years politicians are not defending their reasons for continuing public service.

Instead of becoming outraged at a system run amok the people have chosen to retreat to their separate sides of the fence in the hope that change will occur from the epicenter of the problem.

A problem that has outlasted failed promises made by candidates to change the culture of intolerance on Capitol Hill when dreamers are met with mandates, pointed fingers and obstruction from within their own political party structure when it comes time to turn promises into action.

The problems of the 21st century are bigger than any political squabble or hysteria involving communication mediums built to bring people together in ways that were unimaginable decades ago.

Politics and Social Media by themselves cannot do damage to our fellow human beings or the planet alone but can become destructive or positive elements depending on how they are applied by their users.

In the matter of politics, no extreme figure can be elected without the support of a public that allows it to be so and in the matter of social media the direction of conversation in a positive or negative direction to help change or destroy the world is at the fingertips of each individual user on a network.

Each and every one of us has the choice of being users that follow the path that has been paved in front of us regardless of the smoldering buildings that line the sides of the road or users who choose to open our eyes, ears and minds to the benefits that come from choosing to use common sense in decision making.

It’s only in times of crisis that destructive patterns have the ability to truly be seen for what they are.

The pattern of spending without regard for the things that will happen when the bill is due, the pattern of acting without regard for the long term health consequences of the human population and the pattern of politicians being held on pedestals for being educated or a member of a party and not for what they will do to change the toxic climate in Washington, DC have all contributed to the problems the world is dealing with in the here and now.

The problems with the economy is not an Australian, American, British, Greek, German, African or Asian problem but it is a world problem that will not be fixed on the backs of any one group.

If now isn’t the time for factions and parties within world governments to drop their banners of allegiance to pet programs and pleasing the political party base there will be no other time until it’s too late.

Too late to piece together Humpty Dumpty after his fall from an invisible perch that was simply too big to fail…
