Why We’re Here, Why We Should Care and The Angry Electorate of Extremes
November 15th 2009 15:06
If the statement about a society being as great as the members who make up its weight holds any relevance in a modern technological world, there is a serious conversation that needs to be had…
Apathy is the King of the day in a world of extreme conversation.
Apathy that is allowing elected representatives to get away with not taking care of the needs of their constituents.
Extreme conversation about racism, wars, religious and social intolerance, hidden agendas and lack of understanding have all clouded the issues.
The issues of how a country this large can exist for many years to come with a system based around direct representation.
Direct representation that is meant to be by and for the people is being pushed aside for the causes of special interests and political career advancement.
Direct representation that is not being used by the people because of an us vs. them political atmosphere that has created a litmus test on whoever turns out to be the winners and losers from election to election…
If there’s a theme that could sum up all of the problems in our political system it would be one of missing the point.
Every man or woman in this world has a moment in their lives when they wake up one day and realize the world isn’t what they thought it was before that second, minute, hour or day when it all comes to slap them in the face.
For me that moment came when a government representing the country I love slapped me with failures within its system which reigned down on my head and changed my life.
For me this was a defining moment because it gave me the choice of cowering in my shell and lashing back at a failed system in my personal situation or to try and put the skills I possessed from a lifetime of education and experience to use in an effort to help make a difference in my country and the world.
A difference that wasn’t centered on any partisan agenda, money making ideal, religious affiliation, racial or gender cause.
The path I chose to take was one of embracing a world of extremes and trying to bring people together through conversation.
Conversation that has been hidden away in the deepest caves while we wait for people “smarter than us” to drag it out for their own personal, political or business gain.
In my moment of clarity I realized that there are more important things in this life beyond money, what society deems as success or personal luxuries.
A moment of clarity that drove me to help make a difference in peoples lives through the creation of conversation, opening up minds and doing everything in my power to help my fellow man, woman and child.
There are too many moments in our technological world where heart warming stories about the good things people are doing are passed over and left on the backburner of our news cycles for the latest political scandal or the pushing of partisan political agendas.
Moments that give us a warm feeling inside for a few fleeting moments before returning to the news of confusion that splinters us onto our individual sides of the fence.
When we look squarely at our system of politics it begins and ends with the people.
The people who go to the voting booths the first Tuesday of every November and make the ultimate decision about the direction of our nation.
When looking at the cogs in the system even the most hardened cynic can not deny the power that has been given back to the people in world of open information.
A world created by the dreams of our elders who fought and died for society to have open and unfettered freedom of information.
A world where the people aren’t forced to filter their news through paper news empires or FCC regulated broadcast networks on the television or radio airwaves.
What we have is the availability of an open forum to hash out ideas and find a better way when the structured forces of the news media limits the conversation.
Limitations that are filtered by the sponsors who write the checks for these things to go across the airwaves.
Limitations that are filtered by men and women who run the empires that are created through synergy when a single person or corporation owns a print, broadcast and media empire.
Before we can make any claims about “things being ok” with the food we eat, the air we breathe or the politicians who are making day to day decisions concerning our safety or our children’s safety we have to ask the questions.
The questions about why things are the way they are beyond pointing fingers to the left or right for causing the mess our country is in today.
Questions about the dangers behind celebrating any political cause or victory based on a religious, social, gender or racial skew because of the things that will come when opportunities to challenge policy and procedure are mistaken for discrimination.
With all of our actions and reactions as a society to political parties that are in power and the blood thirsty lust for absolute power it appears that our goal as a society is for one side or the other to obtain the status of a dictatorship.
Absolute power that was the worst fears our forefathers and the reasons for the creation of a branched system of government.
A branched system of government that creates a system beyond political parties where the average citizen has the right to open access in contact to their elected representatives to fix problems in their state, county or neighborhoods from the federal level down.
What we have is an imperfect system that is constantly pushed and pulled to be anything but what it was designed to be. As much as we enjoy power play conversations of fear involving God, Guns, Abortion, Race and Sexism it does nothing to help us confront the real issues.
Real issues about the new world order that has pushed the poverty line up in the slow destruction of the middle class. What’s left behind in the victory speeches about economic recovery and meeting goals set forth in political campaigns is the reality behind the unemployment numbers and the new face of poverty.
It’s easy to hear worlds like foreclosure and unemployment and still think in terms of the unfortunate American Citizens left behind during the tech boom of the 90’s and the hustle and bustle of the 80’s.
What we have in this day and age is an emerging class who used to be our neighbors and co-workers who have fallen on hard times in the loss of their jobs and homes but are not receiving the media attention that is being hogged by the 24/7 up and down drama of our stock markets as we wait for the announcement and impending coronation of the economy being saved by a super hero like figure.
The coronation may come but it will only be a hollow victory as we gaze upon the American Landscape of the have’s and have nots.
A world where we will have the rich and the poor with very little in between.
Whether we want to admit it or not, there is a growing class of the radical middle in this country.
A class that didn’t participate in the parades and hoopla to coronate the Democratic Party savior and also didn’t grab their pitchforks in effigy during Election “08”.
The radical middle is simply watching it all fall apart as we gaze upon a nation trying to put the train on the tracks without using the full power of our hearts and minds.
Full power that needs the strength of all Americans from the left, right and everywhere in between and not the just the hardened left or right.
Until we figure this out beyond pointed fingers of defeat, blame and victory there will be no solutions of how we can get it all back again and the line will only creep higher and higher until that small radical middle becomes an angry electorate of extremes.
