Separating Fluff and Bull from Facts and Fiction “Agree to Disagree”
October 5th 2010 13:13
In the 234 year history of the United States of America, no issue has created more confusion and anger than the delicate balancing act of protecting the freedoms embodied in the Constitution and Bill of Rights while also safeguarding the personal rights of the individual who come into harms way from its abuse.
A quandary that confronted the forefathers when putting pen to paper in the creation of the Constitution and Bill of Rights which would be the framework of a society built on freedom and the opportunities that come with its glory.
While the idea of a “free society” has been engrained in the hearts and minds of every American citizen through text books or the citizenship process it must also be confronted with the unspoken sacrifice.
The unspoken sacrifice in being confronted with things that evoke feelings of anger, sadness and confusion as the limits of these freedoms have been and will continue to be tested so long as the United States government honors the ideals of the documents that provide the freedoms that make our society function.
Whether it’s a Klu Klux Clan demonstration, men and women who use the name of a religion to push radical agendas against homosexuals or the military, Protesters burning the stars and stripes, American citizens who publicly speak out against the country that gives them the right to do so or those who create grandiose displays of shock and awe for the purpose of desecrating everything we hold dear to our hearts; it is the idea that these people are allowed to do these things that also gives us the right to live our lives as we see fit.
Lives that aren’t forced to worship a national religion nor are they confined to the role playing expectations of a federal government.
The idea of a free society is a radical notion that must be balanced with the impact that a public display will place on the rights to privacy in grief and the precedents that are set when the system is allowed to run amok without safeguards.
While the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights are only a contract between the powers of the government and the rights of the individual citizen it is also an important road map in the expectations of how we should treat one another to honor the ideals they inject into our society.
Just as much as the abuse of these rights create animosity and strife among the populous; blocking access to these rights will set the stage for a slippery slope effect that will come back on us in years to come.
