Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Separating Fluff and Bull from Facts and Fiction “The Election Year Pledge”

September 23rd 2010 12:19
For every election year there is a new promise for the kind of “change” America needs to renew the responsibilities of legislators to the American people.

For every “Contract with America”, “Campaign for Change” and “Tea Party” the American people are given the same results.

Elected officials who illustrate great ideas with graphs, charts and grand agendas but show a lack of performance when the time comes to put words to action.

Words that promise more transparency in government, unity among the populous and a return to the politics of yesteryear that was more about acting for the will of the people rather than promoting political party or selfish interests.

The current Republican “Pledge to America” is the latest chapter in the age old story of a political party rallying its base behind a singular partisan cause.

Much like the Election 08 “Campaign for Change” the goals of this movement are focused on unseating the current power structure, giving the people of the United States of America a greater voice when it comes to the legislation that affects their lives and changing the way Capitol Hill does business.

As much as it warms my heart to see a revolution that started on the streets of America force its way into the agenda of a national conversation it also raises a red flag of caution in the dilution of another pure idea by the power structure.

Much like the early speeches of President Obama and the “Movement for Change” that professed the need for whole sale changes in the power structure of the federal government on both sides of the aisle it is the ideas of the Tea Party that have been transformed into a partisan agenda.

A partisan agenda that is laced with the fire and brim stone of social issues to divide the populous along separate sides of the fence under the guise of a pledge to restore the prosperity of America.

A pledge is a great thing because it helps simplify the conversation when it comes to making important decisions between party candidates but there is also something to be said about the track record of the things that happen when the time comes for these pledges to be met.

A solid record of corruption, pettiness, partisan bickering and lack of transparency when it comes time for the party in power to live up to their own agenda.

It’s easy to stand up against the party in power but asking the men and women in power to honor the promises made in an election year when flowery words twist and turn to please the populous is a feat that has yet to be met.
