Separating Fluff and Bull from Facts and Fiction “Freedom of Double Standards”
September 16th 2010 11:58
From the very first meeting of the Continental Congress to lay the groundwork for a nation built on freedoms to the latest flap about a Pastor’s plans to publicly burn the Quran we have and will always be a nation of Double Standards.
Double Standards in how we feel about the raw definition of freedom and the sacrifices that have to be made in order for American Citizens to maintain the rights they take for granted.
Sacrifices in opening up our minds to understanding that we live in a vast society and that having the rights to expression, freedom of religion, civil rights and the rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness is a delicate balancing act that should not be tipped in one way or another to the determent of the big picture.
The big picture that is distorted when the majority of Americans are angered by a group’s decision to desecrate the memory of a soldier who gave all for their country by protesting a military funeral or when the symbol of freedom in the American flag is burned by way of public display.
For every act of freedom that slaps everything our country stands for in the face there are also the freedoms that our society thrives on to function. As much is it pains us to watch these things happen the dark reality is within the fact that one freedom can not exist without the other.
For as much as the experts and political zealots like to talk about the intent of our forefathers and the decisions they would make if they were alive in the present we are still left with the conversation of now and how the Constitution has remained constant over time.
After 234 years what we are left with is an open conversation about our freedoms and how they are rights that can not be infringed on by any institution of government.
While the line has been twisted and turned to protect the rights of children from social predators and the powers of government have been expanded to protect the security of the nation; the freedoms that allow our society to function have remained in tact.
It is these freedoms that allow American Society to be called free and it will remain that way so long as the American People allow it to be.
