Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Crisis, War and the Looming Disaster to end all Disasters

March 20th 2011 13:09
In a news cycle filled with the harsh realities of the times we live it has become harder and harder for the average world citizen to grasp the things happening in their town, city and nation much less the things happening on the other side of the globe.

Names that were once associated with peace and pushing the issue of not getting involved with the affairs of dictators have now been forced to join a multi-nation movement against a government clinging to power on the backs of its people.

An event that began as a record setting Earthquake felt around the world has now become a litmus test for the future direction of conversations about energy alternatives at a time when financial industries are still standing on shaky ground.

The issue of money, jobs and food still stands as the issue closest to the lives of every human being on the planet as governments remain cautious to the things that happen when the necessities become unattainable or in short supply.

With so much happening all at once it could be said that the human race is being faced with the perfect storm.

A storm that is gusting all around the world as nations try to re-build the houses of thinking that were once thought to be indestructible because there was no reason to doubt that things would remain as they have always been.

Over the course of a decade these ideas of indestructibility have been tested by the harsh reality of terror coming to American shores, forces of nature that were thought to be once in a lifetime events becoming a recurring reality played on our television and computer screens, dictators crossing party lines and twisting political agendas in the amount of destruction and world disruption they are willing to cause in the name of power and the deflation of the idea of credit when decades of borrowing and putting aside debts transformed into the monstrosity known as the national deficit.

From these realities, a mythology has been created to help certain segments of the population absorb everything at once.

A mythology that bundles all of these issues together in a box of tangled wires to play on the human fear of the unknown.

The unknown that comes when the problem is clear but solutions fly from different directions…

Solutions of a radical nature that come from looking within ourselves and deciding that all of our problems are coming from forces looking to disrupt the way we live our lives.

In a time of crisis this is the most dangerous form of thinking because it can turn neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother, religion against religion, state against state and nation against nation in a fight for dwindling resources.

If history is any indication of the dangers that are to come we have yet to witness the bottom of the abyss created by our own design.

An abyss that will create a further rise in energy prices from a mixture of wars in the Middle East, an increase in the use of fossil fuel energy as nations face the facts on nuclear power and the inability to protect plants from nature’s fury and the loss of resources as nations begin to dry up oil reserves and homegrown sources of energy.

Dwindling energy resources will mean an escalation in food prices, a further loss in jobs across the world, a more widened split between social classes as the distance between the bottom and top becomes more apparent and a resulting societal disruption in a fight for resources and power in nations across the world.

If there was ever a time for societies to read between the lines and rise above these circumstances this time would be now.

While all this may sound good in theory; the true reality of everything we have evolved modern society into is an unquenchable thirst for empires, monopolies and kingdoms.

In a quest for these things, decisions made in the short term will always rule the day and the long term outlook will always be left to suffer.

At the end of the day every “free” society is made up of individuals who decide the future direction of their country by selecting representatives in elections.

As long as these elections remain a free and open process it is the people who are responsible for the decisions these leaders make and the effect they have on the world.

The decision to use this power or rest it in the hands of another is up to us as individuals just as much as it is a choice to use our minds to make decisions as opposed to only reacting to the things that are said by public figures.

To truly understand our role in the world is to understand the meaning of the word freedom and applying it to every aspect of our daily lives.
