Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

True Stories of Knowledge and Awareness In the Fight Against Cancer

July 17th 2009 11:53
If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell.

~ Lance Armstrong

In today’s conversation I'm looking to have an in depth discussion about a disease that has a personal affect on every man, woman and child in this country and around the world.

Cancer in it’s many forms is the silent killer that has given us an understanding of our mortality and the need for us to stand together as a world community in the face of it’s incurability.

There are countless stories around the globe of families losing mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, cousins and son’s to a disease that has perplexed scientists in finding a way to win the battles and ultimately the war to eradicate the number one killer of human beings.

When we break down the issue the fight against Cancer comes down to a few simple steps that each and every one of us can take on in our personal lives.

The first step is Awareness.

With the awareness of the devastation this disease has caused across the planet we can band together past all aspects of money, religion, political affiliation, gender, sexual orientation and socio-economic class to end the pandemic.

The second step is Knowledge.

With the knowledge of knowing how the fight is being conducted from the ground level and how we can personally contribute to the soldiers who are working tirelessly to eradicate this disease we can find hope.

Hope in knowing that the needed funding is getting to the right places to keep the progress that has already been made on pace to solve the problem along with the hope that we can tell more stories of survival through advances in screening and helping people get diagnosed before it’s too late.

The third step is Compassion.

Every human being walking this Earth has a place deep down inside that holds the key to our humanity.

This is the place where compassion shines through in disaster to help our neighbors, colleagues and people we have never met before to get out of desperate situations.

This is the place where strangers gather to take on social injustice or a government that is not working for the benefit of her people.

This is the place where we take in strangers out of the cold and make them part of our family for nothing more than the simple reason’s of answering the call to help our fellow man through community service.

Through this compassion we can take the elements from the first two steps to the next level to ensure that people who don’t have access to the medical technology that is readily available in our lives can get screened, counseled and treated.

When it comes down to it each and every person in the conversation has to do their part in the fight to eradiate all forms of Cancer to prevent any further loss of family members, friends, colleagues and people we have yet to meet in our personal lives.

The cause truly hits home when we listen to stories from survivors who answered the call and were able to arm themselves with the weapons needed to win the battle against the world’s number one killer but battles are only steps on the road to winning the war.

For each victory we need new soldiers to stand up and join the fight through donations, spreading the knowledge of encouragement to get tested for every form of cancer and to tap into our compassion to help in anyway we can when the opportunity arises.

In a technological age 24-hour access is available to discover opportunities to help and to read stories of hope and survival.

Without groups that dedicate their lives to fundraising and applying these funds to the cause of fighting Cancer stories of survival would not be a possibility.

There is no denying that the world is a beautiful place but it is up to each and every one of us to do our part to ensure each and every world citizen can enjoy these gifts that were given to us without the threat of disease taking it away from them too soon.
