Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Politics, Culture and the Never Ending Conversation

March 21st 2010 14:00
In the story of how America has developed as a society we are forced to come face to face with a conversation about politics and culture.

The culture that will always fight for freedom in all its forms and the politics that enforces these rights into law…

Like any other society in the world America has never been a place where we always got it right.

Within these missteps in our history has always been a process, when allowed to work, has set precedents in opening up rights to people of all religions, races and genders in protection of the fundamentals in the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Even with the basics that served as the bedrock of the freedoms we hold dear as American citizens there is still a conflict that exists among our legislators and within the populous.

A conflict that exists from a simple radical idea set forth by our forefathers in creating a country based on the principles of freedom without restraint.

The Freedom that created a document that would evolve with society as opposed to one that would only serve as a testament to the chaotic times in which they were living.

Chaotic times in which men and women could be considered property, most of the world was still serving to the whims of a King or Queen and the idea of the people having the power to choose their own representatives was left to rebels and terrorists.

The conversation of culture can not be separate from the conversation of politics.

Topics that instill a sense of fear, curiosity and passion among every American and World Citizen in the idea that things can be improved while also leaving the door open to the things held close to our hearts being taken away.

These are the reasons why people still take advantage of their First Amendments Rights to Speech and Assembly to speak out against a government that refuses to listen to the will of the people.

These are the reasons why movements are created against war and social injustices in protection of the unborn and gay rights to elevate society to higher level of understanding in the way we see the world as individuals.

There is a cliché phrase about two sides of the fence that is used to describe political conflicts and as the term goes a man or woman is either on one side or the other.

In today’s modern culture of extremes there is no longer a fence but a Great Wall of Expectations in the way we view our Representatives on all levels of government and a Great Wall of Expectations we put on each other.

An expectation for a man or woman to politically orientate themselves based on the color of their skin, socio economic background, sexual preference, religious affiliation or gender.

Thanks to the use of all these things as social weapons to play on our passions and fears; a litmus test has been created to drive us away from one another and create two party domination in the voting booth.

Domination that has evoked a sense of resentment among the populous when both parties fail the American people in the creation of War’s without solution, the greatest economic deficit since The Great Depression, out of control spending that is focused more on taking care of campaign donors than taking care of the American people and endless cycle of joblessness that has only been met with blame instead of action.

Our problems in this country are not from a Bush or Clinton nor are they from the current administration of Barack Obama.

Our problems in this country come squarely from our need to pick up our pitch forks in anger against the people in power as opposed to centering the conversation on the topics of discussion that have never left the room.

Topics surrounding closed ears and minds focused on party domination in a time of economic and world crisis that will only get worse if our elected officials continue to forget the reasons why they were placed in positions of prestige.

Getting it right is something more than griping about how Obama has our nation on the wrong path or wining about a Republican strategy of obstructionism to muddy up the First African American President.

Both sides of the issue have deep and apparent faults but it is up to the American people to write the next chapter of the story.

The story where we can turn our sights to radical agendas that will result in more exclusion of segments in our society or the next chapter that will result in pressuring our legislators to do the right thing.

The right thing in setting a path of direct action to help the American people in a time of crisis.

Direct action that will come separate from any party agenda created by spin doctor or political action committee.

This nation was created by and for the people and it is only in the face of crisis that we can see through the shades in our need to take it back.

Taking it back is about more than turning from one problem to the other.

Taking it back is about opening our hearts, ears and minds to both sides of the issue and using our anger as our conscience as opposed to our guide.

In the conversation of politics and culture this is the only way we can begin to move forward in a world where it is much easier to continue on the same path.
