Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Deconstruction of Sarah Palin and Modern Conservatism

November 8th 2010 14:28
It was once said that after a man or woman strips away denial and rationalization they can come to a sense of who they truly are.

A wise quote that could be useful for anyone facing a crisis built from their own choices in life but could also be a proper fit in the conversation surrounding the modern age of politics.

A modern age of politics that is reactionary to the crisis of terror, war on foreign shores and financial peril that has defined a country that once enjoyed decades of peace on American shores, financial prosperity where the plight of the sick and poor could be easily swept under the rug with a false sense of calm from “business as usual” on Capitol Hill and citizens could feel secure in the men and women representing their interests in Washington D.C. because of the lack of urgency affecting their daily lives.

Urgency that wasn’t caught in a net fear of losing our way of life, homes or financial means of providing for our families because of the trickle effect that has disrupted one of the strongest financial markets on the planet.

It was easy to lay cozy in the belief that America was a Super Power who would continue to avoid the things we only read about in other countries until reality came to our doorsteps.

A reality that was easily lumped into a conversation about George W. Bush, Hurricane Katrina, Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq along with the mural of the GOP as a whole driving the bus into the ditch.

A bus that functioned with moving parts from all the Representatives and Senators in both Houses of Congress along with the Cabinet and President of the United States of the America in the Executive Branch.

For the work that was done to preach to the choir about all the mistakes of the Bush Administration and the GOP in the decades that lead to Election “08” Americans from sea to shining sea were greeted with the presence of what we were told is a Super Hero.

A Super Hero that would break glass ceilings, bring together all the political parties and fix America with the same surgical precision in which he ran the most flawless political campaign in American history.

Long after the ticker tape parades ended, the record breaking crowds who came to Washington D.C. to be a part of history left the city and the speeches came to a close what Americans were left with is more of the same pettiness, bickering and a lack of action to directly fix the problems facing the men and women on main street America.

For all the Hope and Bravado created by the first Political Campaign played out on Reality TV it did nothing to help America dig herself out from the gutter in the creation of real solutions.

The denial that was created in thinking that one man or woman would be the answer in closing the gap between race, religion, gender, nationalities and sexual orientations is gone along with the rationalization in believing that a politician we desperately needed to be great simply needs more time.

America has finally come to a sense of who we really are and have chosen a change based on the merit of decisions made on Capitol Hill rather than falling into the fairy tale romance of broken glass ceilings, mythical stories of greatness before candidates have a chance to prove themselves and replacing the hard truth for the glitz and glamour of the good story.

Looking forward to the battle for control of the American political process; citizens are faced with another figure that took the national stage in Election “08” but made the decision to be a public figure instead of maintaining her role as a public servant trying to create change from within.

A role that is harder to scrutinize in political discussion because Sarah Palin is free to stand on the outside of the fire from public opinion and the reality of wins and losses on the journey towards her ultimate goal.

A goal to create change within her political party and across the national landscape to have the voices squelched by the media, their own political party and what some might say is public opinion heard on a national stage.

Much like President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton the name Sarah Palin has been polarizing for some from the first moment Senator John McCain announced her as his running mate two years ago but there can be no argument about the influence her image and persona has added to the fuel that is driving the GOP Express.

When it comes down to it, the modern Republican Movement is not something that is going away any time soon.

Much to the chagrin of the men and women who would like to see all remnants of the Tea Party fail, for the extreme ideas that have transformed the movement past simply focusing on spending and accountability to the people, it is not going to simply be absorbed and destroyed.

Any movement that comes from the people to make government more accountable for their actions should be championed by the masses.

It is only when we stop and listen to the core ideals of people we may not necessarily see eye to eye with that we pick up on something that needs to be addressed in an open forum.

The things that politicians from every party have been getting away with for years while we wield our pitch forks at the mere mention of political and public figures we’ve been told to stand tall against.

A figure that may never be accepted by the full body of the electorate can still be just as powerful when given the right forum to say the things that need to be said and to be heard by the American people.

Judging by the results on election night we cannot assume that an individual was responsible for the resurgence of a party that was considered dead two years ago nor can we place all the blame on the historic rate of measures passed by the Obama administration and both houses of a democratically controlled Congress.

What we can do is take time to step back and breathe in all the things that are happening in and around our government bodies. Once we take that breath we can come to an understanding of a nation that was never meant to be ruled by any one individual or political party.

A nation that was built into a complex system to avoid the powder keg we are currently facing.

When we understand this we can begin searching for better solutions than the ones we are finding through a system that offers a lack of choice.
