Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Dirty "P" Word: When Being Partisan Suddely Became The Wrong Thing To Do

March 15th 2009 14:21
“I wouldn't be too serious about bipartisanship. It's a great myth that ought to be fostered. And don't bring too damn much scholarship to bear on it. You'll prove it out of existence if you're not careful.”

~ Dean Acheson (April 11, 1893 – October 12, 1971)
Secretary Of State in the Administration of President Harry S. Truman 1949–1953

NOUN:
1. A fervent, sometimes militant supporter or proponent of a party, cause, faction, person, or idea.
2. A member of an organized body of fighters who attack or harass an enemy, especially within occupied territory; a guerrilla.

Maybe there is something wrong with my thought process or maybe it’s a matter of the country I love becoming so embroiled in the chaos that surrounds it; where someone who walks like a Duck, quacks a like a Duck and has swam with Ducks all her life can suddenly be taken seriously in calling herself a Swan.

In all my years of following political coverage it has always been an understood fact that there are two sides to every argument. In our modern political two party system the only sides taken seriously in the grand scheme of political direction and discussion are those from the Republican and Democratic parties respectively.

The figures that spear head these parties through leadership posts are raw models of liberalism or the conservative message from the far left and far right. It is the job of the political czars to dilute there messages for the palate of the independent voter or average American in concern with national elections.

Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich are two representatives of pure and simple partisanship. Their rises to success are examples of the war between the two parties through the logs of our history and the formula for capitalizing on the mistakes from the executive level.

Bill Clinton’s failures in the arena of morality left the door open for Gingrich to lead a red charge with a Republican Congress that promised to clean up Washington. In the process of cleaning up Washington this Congress that controlled 2/3 of our government also became corrupt within itself after achieving absolute power with the election of George W. Bush.

The difference between the Newt Gingrich Rise and Fall to that of Nancy Pelosi’s current reign as Speaker of the House is with the facts that his reign was ruled by the “I’m right and You’re Wrong” philosophy but he wasn’t afraid to reiterate it to your face.

With the evidence of a Congress and Oval Office elected on the bedrock of change in the way government works, not doing what “we the people” mandated for them to do, the rats are coming out of the sewer disguising themselves as house pets.

No disguise will be able to hide the facts of what’s happening on the streets of America at this very moment.

If you’re a partisan who is seeking to further your agenda by pursuing witch hunts on former Presidents, trying to wipe the history books clean of the opposite parties accomplishments, working to pursue the same partisan arguments in the arena of god, guns or religion and have the audacity to believe that your districts policies will work for the rest of the nation then you should stand up and say what your truly are and not hide behind cloaks of a partisan media.

Statements made simply to entice the media to publish blasphemy get under my skin for the simple fact that it encourages their laziness. Facts are Facts and should not be spun into a woven partisan tale of the Republican Party creating a conspiracy against The Speaker of the House.

The simple fact of throwing a bill into the Republican leaderships face and saying your going to like or we’ll make you look bad doesn’t make you bi partisan nor does it make the Republicans who rejected the wasteful spending partisan for doing their job in trying to balance out the bill.

I’m not on here to say the Democrats are evil nor am I hear to argue the merits of Federalism versus State’s Right’s. What I am here to do is balance out the BS and call a spade a spade.

If America isn’t ready to have the understanding that partisanship exists on both sides of the aisle beyond heroes of God, Guns and Abortion we are in for serious trouble and rude awakenings.

Rude awakenings evoking the memories of President George Herbert Walker Bush uttering the words, “Read My Lips” and having to turn around against his words when faced with a recession.

Rude Awakenings of President William Jefferson Clinton uttering the words, “I Did Not Have Sexual Relations With That Woman” and changing his tune when called under oath.

Rude Awakenings of a rush to war with spotty intelligence information only to find out our reasons for taking to arms in a search for terrorists and weapons of mass destruction were misguided at best.

As much as we like to believe that the election of our first African American President was some sort of renaissance in thought and action for America politically, nothing has changed in the way our elected officials approach arguments or solve problems.

This very week President Obama joined this list of illustrious modern day presidents by uttering the words “The economy isn’t as bad as we think.”

Another sentence that will live in infamy as I look to the hundreds of thousands of homeless Americans and the children of these hard working citizens and ask them:

Is the current state of the economy really as bad as we think?
