A Hitchhikers Guide to Surviving Times of Crisis
March 6th 2011 12:36
When the economic crisis first took center stage, the American and World public were left unprepared to face the deeper understanding of what crisis would mean for the future of a fragile world.
A future that would soon effect the way we live as a society and would require many sacrifices from each and every human being on the planet regardless of their socio economic class, age, gender, social status, orientation, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion or skin color.
When the word “sacrifice” is mentioned in conversation; images of suffering and people giving up more than they can bear immediately comes to mind.
From these images, our natural instinct is to form a defensive posture to protect the things we had before the crisis hit and to look for signs of recovery from the storm that was supposed to be a temporary imposition as opposed to a permanent housemate.
From these natural reactions, a wave of uprisings, political awareness and posturing has spread across the globe as nations, cities and communities adjust to the face of a new world.
A new world where addictions to energy, free spending and simple answers to questions that require careful thought and multiple sides of input are no longer acceptable.
While some may find comfortability in blaming technology, the rise in food prices across the globe, global warming or the men and women who failed to steer the ship in the right direction while the economic crisis was happening under their noses for the discourse that is happening across the globe; it is a far greater feat to look at ourselves as individuals and the things that are happening in our own backyards.
While the past cannot be fixed, it is up to us as a society to learn from the mistakes of those who came before and to take advantage of the opportunities that face us in the here and now.
Opportunities to move past the pointed fingers and the need to elevate one group over another for the sake of ensuring that one side is able to survive while the other side is left in suffering.
The things that are happening in Wisconsin and other parts of the globe are bigger than collective bargaining rights or a simple squabble between Democrats and Republicans.
What we have before us is the first example of things that are to come as state legislatures are being faced with the true effects of a world economic crisis as it filters downs from a federal issue, to a state issue and ultimately to local economic issue.
As the situation gets closer and closer to home, it is important for each and every individual to band together in deciding what is best for their community by making the hard sacrifices as opposed to taking care of their own.
Throughout the history of the United States of America, it’s been said that when the times get tough we have it in our DNA to come together for solutions that will help us rise as a nation no matter how difficult the struggle.
Looking back on these words and the circumstances that have put them to the test in the Great Depression, Revolutionary War, Civil War, Civil Rights Movement, Attack on Pearl Harbor and 9/11; I have no choice but to be filled with a sense of pride and admiration for a nation that was able to heal during these great circumstances.
While I want to believe that this spirit of perseverance will carry us through this current crisis I am also forced to observe the facts and think otherwise.
The facts that are being weighed down with the bricks of our ability to resort to pettiness and division in the face of all the signs that point to the overwhelming need for unity as one nation for the benefit of the whole as opposed to the few.
What’s happened in the time since these events is we’ve become an every man or woman for themselves society and have resorted to supporting solutions for our tribe rather than thinking about the bigger picture.
The bigger picture that is about state and local legislatures across the United States of America that are now facing tough decisions that involve laying off government employees, closing schools and other budget trimming measures.
Facts that can’t be spun or twisted for the betterment of one side or the other…
When it comes time to make these decisions it will take more than quick and easy answers from one side of the conversation.
History has always shown us that the end result of this kind of thinking is and has always been failure for everyone involved.
The right solution is sacrifice created by groups willing to drop their banners in an effort to make the best decision for the people they represent no matter the costs that may come from doing so.
