Madness has gripped the land as we prepare to launch the greatest celebration of the sports year.
The one sporting event that can bring together the Office Secretary, the Girlfriend or Boyfriend who has never watched a NCAA Basketball Game in their entire lives and the Sports Guru who has been to every 2010 Season Vermont Catamount Basketball Game.
In exactly 3 days every Conference Championship, Record for consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearances, Winning Streak and “Tournament Ready” reputation will be thrown out the window when the slates are wiped clean and a school the size of Morgan St. has just as much of a shot at winning the NCAA National Championship as NCAA Powerhouses Kansas, Syracuse, Duke or Kentucky University.
We’re not here for a history lesson into the school that has the most championships nor are we here for my expert analysis or lack there of.
What we are here for is to find a new way to sort through the mess known as March Madness.
As some of you may know this is my second year attempting to do this and last year didn’t go so well…
Not as bad as the year George Mason ran wild through the NCAA’s where my Elite Eight all but disappeared in the Second Round but bad enough for me to spend the year thinking of a new formula that will escalate me to the top of my NCAA Poll and onto prizes and glory in my online bracket.
What is this formula you may ask?
This formula is simply known as the “Fierce Creature Test”.
Some of you may have seen the movie while others are scratching their heads in thinking that this automatically means I’m going to pick a team like the California Bears to win it all.
The “Fierce Creature Test” is a formula used for sorting out the toss up games normally reserved for a coin toss in the first and second rounds.
In the current formula of 64 teams I’ve located exactly 17 games that fall into this category. As we go through the four regions I will refer back to this formula with an explanation as to why one mascot will reign supreme over the other.
In this journey we are going to begin with the Midwest Bracket which will be taking place in St. Louis Missouri.
A mainstay in the NCAA tournament known as the Kansas Jayhawks received the number one seed in this bracket and I can’t see any reason why they will not advance to the Final Four.
In the first “Fierce Creature” matchup we have the UNLV Rebels taking on the Northern Iowa Panthers.
A Panther in Iowa can not be a Happy Kitty which is the reason why I’m picking Northern Iowa to win this one and advance to the Second Round.
I’m picking Michigan State to advance and meet up with the Houston Cougars in the second round who will take out the Maryland Terps in the second “Fierce Creature” competition.
San Diego State Aztecs in a no brainer “Fierce Creature” blow out over the Tennessee Volunteers who are represented by a sleepy dog.
Georgetown over Ohio followed by the Oklahoma State Cowboys using some foam to take out the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech and Ohio State to advance over the University of California Santa Barbara.
In the Second Round I’m calling for Houston to pull a “Shocker” over Michigan St. to advance to the Sweet 16 and a return to normalcy with Georgetown and Ohio State advancing the Sweet 16.
Kansas over Georgetown in the Elite Eight to head to the Final Four.
Moving onto the West...
The Region ruled by the Syracuse Orange who is limping their way into the NCAA Tournament with consecutive losses.
As a Mountaineer I have spent a “fans” lifetime watching this team summon up “Hulkamania” will power to endlessly frustrate my team into defeat but to falter whenever I put my pride on the line in betting for them to win against any other team or to advance in the NCAA tournament.
Back in the position to follow the same cycle of insanity I have no choice but to do it again.
I’m picking Syracuse to win the battle of the West.
Fierce Creature Test #5 has a team that was once a darling in the Gonzaga Bulldogs taking on the Florida State Seminoles.
In the analysis of any team that has a Bulldog as their school mascot we have to ask our self a few questions. The first question is whether this adorable creature is the Bulldog that can’t make it up stairs or if it is the fierce creature with powerful jaws that strikes fear into the hearts of anyone or anything that crosses its path.
Gonzaga is no longer this fierce creature of yesteryear but I still think that their ferocity is enough to scare off the mailman.
Zags over FSU.
Which leads us to Butler, another team represented by a Bulldog who has continued to let me down year after year.
Not going to do it again and this is justified after my fierce creature test in their matchup against the Universitry of Texas El Paso Miners. Miners will bury the sleepy, lazy always letting me down dogs in the mine’s.
Murray State Racers against the Vanderbilt Commodores is a classic match of the aristocrats taking on the Jockey and Horse. Jockey and Horse will always win this battle as the Murray State Racers advance to the second round.
Xavier Musketeers vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers was a “Fierce Creature” contest no brainer in picking Xavier to advance and eventually advance over Pitt to the Sweet 16 in an eventual date against Kansas State.
Sweet 16 from the West picks are Syracuse UTEP, Xavier and Kansas St with a Syracuse/ Xavier Regional final and Syracuse advancing to the Final Four.
On the East side of the Tournament Bracket things get a little personal but as an objective observer who has never had his team favored this high I have no choice but to be objective or to at least try my best to be...
One of the most storied teams in NCAA Basketball history has secured the Number one seed in this region. Kentucky has been a power house alongside Kansas all season long and deserves a number one seed.
With that said I have Kentucky advancing to the Elite Eight in this conference before jumping into the toughest contest of the year but we’ll get back to that…
“Fierce Creature” contest rundown will start with the Texas Longhorns prevailing over The Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Will move to the Cornell Bears in a Sweet 16 year over the Temple Owls and the Wofford Terriers to terrorize the Wisconsin Badgers along with the Montana Grizzlies over the New Mexico Lobo’s.
In a Tiger vs. Tiger matchup I’m picking Mizzou who will ultimately lose to West Virginia in the Sweet 16 in route to an Elite Eight showdown with Kentucky.
Back to where we started…
In a measure of objective balance I’m picking the West Virginia Mountaineers to prevail over the Kentucky Wildcats for the first trip to the final four since Jerry West was on the court for the Mountaineers.
If there was any bracket that was wide open it’s in the South.
The South where the Duke Blue Devils are the Number One seed but must face their toughest test of the year against a ninth seeded Louisville team in the Second Round where they will ultimately fall I typical fashion.
I’ve got Texas A&M over Utah State, The Siena Saints to take advantage of a year that has been good to Saints in a “Fierce Creature” matchup over the Purdue Boilermakers, Notre Dame over ODU, Baylor over Same Houston State, Saint Mary’s Gaels over the Richmond Spiders in a “Fierce Creature” victory in route to the Sweet 16 with a victory of Villanova.
South Sweet 16 picks are Louisville, Siena, Baylor and Saint Mary’s with Louisville and Baylor in the Elite Eight and Baylor telling the story of how the South was won.
My Final Four Picks are Kansas, Syracuse, West Virginia and Baylor with Kansas and West Virginia in the Finals.
After a close game Mountaineer Nation will finally be able to hold the title of NCAA Men’s Basketball Champion’s.
That’s my story and the time has come for you to be able to write your own. If you’ve never done and NCAA Basketball Tournament Bracket this is the year to do it. The field is wide open for you to put together your own formula in the quest for pride, glory, office supremacy, cash and fame!!!!!
