The Silent Food Crisis
December 5th 2010 14:33
The Human race has always had a problem with food.
Whether it’s the battle against nature, the wars between civilizations for resources or the current state of dealing with an epidemic created from its overabundance in some parts of the world; it’s the struggle that has shaped our existence.
A struggle that still continues in some parts of the world where the weak are left to starve in impoverishment while the men and women in power consume what little resources the land has to offer.
Its stories like this that leads a society immersed in over abundance to question the logic behind the idea of a “Food Crisis” in the modern world where it would appear that obtaining food is on the low list of priorities.
A low list of priorities that was reshaped in a modern age of convenience symbolized by Fast Food Chains that offer the aspect of affordability and convenience for consumers at a price that costs more than simple dollars and cents.
While shaping the conversation with the simple talking point of “Fast Food” may help to identify an enemy in the conversation surrounding the way modern society lost its way to understanding the damage being caused to the human race and the planet; the problem didn’t begin with the invention of the Golden Arches nor will end after the last customer purchases a Double Cheeseburger at the counter.
The problems in modern society surrounding the food we are asked to consume goes deeper than people needing to exercise, understanding the systemic problem with animal rights and government officials failing to do their jobs by ensuring the safety of the food supply.
The problem in modern society goes back to the very core of our existence when unspoken agreements were made between media, business, government and popular opinion to build unspoken compromises of acceptability and shield the raw truth from seeing the light of day.
The raw truth that comes with the decision to use pesticides on crops without any foresight into considering what these chemicals would do when passed onto the consumer.
The raw truth that comes with the unacceptable condition of millions of crowded animals across the globe, set aside to be our entrée items, which has resulted in the biggest contributor to the creation of new strands of disease that eventually mutate into the health scares we all run in fear from from year to year.
The raw truth about the success of the corporate Meat, Cheese, Egg and Agricultural lobby who have made it their mission to influence representatives and government organizations in the creation and recreation of food pyramids to the shapes that generate more revenue for their organizations.
The raw truth about the things that have been openly allowed to pass through inspection, sprayed on crops, put in our oceans and injected into livestock for the sake of profits to sustain the businesses that pump millions of dollars into political campaigns of the big two political parties when the focus of government organizations should be on protecting the safety of the Tax Paying Citizens who pay their salaries.
This is the World we live in.
A World focused on the bottom line as opposed to the consequences that come when we forget about the basics.
The basics of protecting the sources of the food we eat, our lifeblood in the water that sustains our bodies and our fellow human being above all else.
In an age where pundits and cynics enjoy laughing at the idea of compromise and use words like naive to describe “dreamers” who look forward to a government that works for the people instead of their own self interests; it should come as a surprise that a united front was able to set up an elaborate system behind closed doors.
A system that is ready to attack anyone who questions its existence by calling men and women who stand up for the animals abused in the system “out of touch” and the people who choose to go out of their way to not support a broken system by living local, organic, vegetarian or vegan as something foreign.
The problems with the system has nothing to do with the agendas of McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Hardee's, Burger King or any other Fast Food Chain nor does it have anything to do with a local restaurants goal of balancing a difficult budget by trying to buy the most affordable food products as possible.
The problem begins and ends with a system that has been created to lock the consumer into a situation that lacks choice.
Choice by being allowed to make informed decisions without financial restraint from the high priced and low abundance options of organic products compared to the ease and affordability of what has been created as the status quo.
When the status quo is an option that has been proven to cause health problems on a global scale from the chemicals that is contained in the product, lacks cleanliness from the amount of fecal matter from the expedient process in which it is prepared and has been known to be in association with cancers and heart disease the public has a serious problem on its hands.
Based on the Congressional legislation passed last week and all the legislation that has come before; the federal government has no intention of making any real headway into fixing the core of the problem that will only continue to grow so long as the World ignores it.
A problem that was created with the intention of winning the battle against nature has now created a multitude of new concerns that effect more than the people who feed into the system.
A system that was broken before it even began is growing into a worldwide epidemic without anyone to keep a watchful eye on the destruction that is being caused in its path.
It’s up to us as individuals to do our part to protect ourselves and our planet by supporting local farmers, restaurants who serve organic food, being smart about the food we purchase in the grocery store, informing others and putting pressure our representatives to take a deeper look at the problems being caused by the not so silent epidemic.
