Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Food Poisoning: An in Depth Look at the Continuing Problems in the World Food Supply

August 22nd 2010 13:18
To understand the Food Poisoning Epidemic we must have a conversation about why these Outbreaks continue to occur.

Outbreaks that are sickening millions because of the simplicity that has been lost to a system of confusion.

A system of confusion that is based on the premise of pointing fingers at those who have chosen to speak out against the practices of cruelty that are taking place at millions of facilities in care of the animals that will eventually become the food we put on our dinner plates.

To understand the magnitude of the problem and the reasons why solutions will not be easy we must look to the background stories that tell us why elected officials are reluctant to institute reform against a rogue industry and why the media refuses to cover the issue.

An industry that has spent decades pumping money into the two major political parties of the United States and all the major media outlets in an effort to stake their claim on the conversation.

The conversation of creating a playing field where the mega companies make the rules and the Food and Drug Administration follows suit by allowing the status quo to continue.

The status quo that circumvents the laws of nature by crowding livestock into disease festering pens instead of allowing animals to graze in their natural habitats and adjusting these lifestyle changes by injecting animals with antibiotics and destroying beaks.

If there’s anything the laws of nature will continue to teach us it is within the fact that there are consequences to every action.

The action of overcrowding pens for the millions of chickens that have become our food supply has created a powder keg that has finally exploded into a billion dollar mess for the industrialized food industry and the powers that be have no choice but to allow the American people to finally hear what has been going on for decades.

Groups like the People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals have lead the rallying cry for decades but have only been pushed to the backburner in favor of the easy answers that label them as extremists and out of touch with the conversations of the average American.

The time for the people of the world to face the realities of the damage done by systems created for nothing more than profits is now.

While it would be easy for me to sit here and encourage all of you to support your local economies by buying your food locally or to simply stop supporting restaurants and food suppliers who support industrialized farms who follow the current FDA guidelines this would be an impractical solution.

In the bigger cities and third world nations across the world the idea of organic living is a foreign concept and for most shoppers the final decision about purchasing products to feed our families simply comes down to the final dollar amounts in a time of economic crisis.

The problem our World faces today is a product of government appeasement to the institutions who fulfill fundraising goals and recognizing this beyond partisan conversations must be the first step in resolving the issue.

The issue that can not be skirted in the process of making the decision to buy organic because even these niche markets have been compromised by the rules of the FDA who have deemed it unnecessary for livestock to live their entire lives free grazing or cage free to be labeled as such.

An issue that is also affecting Organic farmers with legislation aimed at ending their way of life courtesy of Congress Men and Women who have designs on creating a marketplace built for industry.

As long as we sit in our camps of animal rights enthusiasts, hunters, Republicans, Democrats, Meat Eaters and Vegans the powers that be will continue to skirt issues like the billion dollar egg recall under the rug and relay messages of propaganda to divert our attention away from the bigger problem.

Propaganda that tells us this is an issue between eating meat and not eating meat when the real issue is about putting pressure on government to clean up the marketplace with regulations that protect the consumer.

The damage that has already been done includes a generation that has been forced to build up a tolerance to fecal matter in the meat, evolution in the rate our youth reaches puberty from the steroids and antibiotics that are pumped into the cattle and chicken along with a generation that is forced to deal with the realities of Salmonella Poisoning without any recourse.

The guideline of cooking the meat to a charbroiled crisp is no longer working just as the old adage of man eating meat since the beginning of civilization has become an irrelevant issue.

It is not the meat that is causing the onslaught of disease in our society, rise in high blood pressure rates, spike in the number of heart disease diagnoses and irregularities in the evolution of our species.

What is causing the problems we are experiencing is the loss of power over the people who are responsible for keeping us safe from the irresponsible practices of others.

When the standards are dropped and the regulators look the other way it is the people who suffer.

It is the job of government to regulate these things and not the duty of the people to cook the meat longer, find niche markets that cost more in the pocket book, look the other way and run scared.

What’s at stake is our future as every outbreak is only setting us up for something much worse down the road.

The Salmonella outbreaks in vegetable stock should be evidence enough but sometimes it takes the people seeing it with their own eyes to understand the real truths behind the reality.
