Finding the Greater Conversation Hidden Behind the Great Wall of Popular Opinion
January 10th 2010 10:57
Throughout the 233 year history of the United States of America there has always been an unlimited amount of conversations hidden behind a great wall.
A great wall that tells us the important topics of the day and molds us into the belief that there are only two sides of the conversation…
Two sides that paint conversations into a black and white hue without the use of other colors in the spectrum to bring both sides together on important topics.
Two sides that grow stronger separately year by year and decade by decade based on the things that make us different rather than the things that make us the same.
From this separation, heroes are built within in the ranks.
Heroes and Heroines that are hoisted on the shoulders of broad topics rather than the merits they bring to the office they have been elected to serve.
From this environment that began with the idea of “picking a side” has also come a backlash where we ask the question of what color or letter represents a person’s political philosophy before we choose how we are going to approach the conversation.
The choice that comes with deciding to agree or disagree with whatever they have to say before a word comes out of their mouths.
A dangerous notion when brought into plain conversation has molded the hearts and minds of a society bitter from years of politics based on the premise of fear, chauvinism, race, partisanship and intolerance.
Intolerance that was met by just as strong hearts of understanding that reshaped political parties and added extra amendments to the Constitution and Bill of Rights that has and will always state that all men, as a human race, are created equal and should be treated as such.
The dangerous thing about heroes based on political ideals is the fact that it always leads us down a dangerous road.
A dangerous road that creates polarizing figures that should be celebrated for representing a society rooted in diversity but are revered for not being everything to everyone.
For every man or woman celebrated as the leader of a political movement there is an equal part of a society who will rally just as hard against their political beliefs.
Contrary to popular opinion, there is no singular thought for Black, Asian, Latino or White America just as much as there is no singular thought for an entire religion or the female or male population.
When we break down the opinions of the American people into demographics we lose sight of simple logic.
The simple logic that tells us that we are a society of free thinkers with the inalienable right to think for ourselves…
In this thought process we have the right to celebrate whomever we choose to and the right to disagree and rally against whomever we choose to as well.
As history has taught us, there will always be great men and women who rise above the time periods in which they lived.
Men like Martin Luther King Jr. and women like Susan B. Anthony along with countless others who fought for everything the United States of America could be and dreams of a better tomorrow for the next generation.
From these men and women, we have built up a sense of hope and inspiration on the purity of the meaning behind their words and life journey.
Words that break down the simplicity of a nation where all men and women are treated the same without any political mandates of how the government should function once the dream is achieved beyond maintaining an environment of equality.
Where we lost sight of this simplicity is when these words were blended into an Us vs.Them political philosophy.
When spin doctors found it politically savvy to divvy up and divide causes rooted in religion, women’s rights, civil rights and constitutional rights onto separate sides of the fence.
This division has built a toxic atmosphere that has a nation running for cover in fear.
Fear of losing everything we have as we seek shelter under our Red or Blue tarps.
Tarps that are meant to shield us from forces that stand against our personal beliefs in an effort to take away our way of life.
Much like the lunacy of grouping a singular thought in a race of people, ethnicity or gender; men and women affiliated with a political party also possess the ability to think for themselves and have built segments within a segment.
Segments that say national Democratic or Republican philosophy does not speak for every member of the party.
When it comes down to it, there are no easy answers or conversations that can cover every gamut of this broad discussion.
It is up to each and every one of us to keep the conversation moving forward and not let anyone say that they know what we are thinking or what we believe in our heart of hearts.
It’s only when we lose our voices, right to form opinions and ability to think for ourselves that we lose it all.
