Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Honoring the Beauty of America While Focusing on the Conversation of Now

September 6th 2009 13:50
In the not so distant past a group of men from different walks of life came together out of a necessity to try and create a land built on idealism. Through these dreams of a nation where all men would be viewed as equal, the foundation of the Bill of Rights and Constitution were put into place.

Through this foundation 233 years of freedom and prosperity have been ejoyed through an open exchange of ideas in the halls of Capitol Hill and the Oval Office where decisions on the current and future direction of the United States of America are made on a daily basis.

It would be presumptuous and ignorant of me to sit here and say that every decision made by the great men and women who formed our nation and those who followed for years to come have been laced in the seeds of perfection.

Mistakes have been made and corrected throughout the history of our young nation and for each mistake we have become a stronger union welcoming in people of every nationality, race, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation as equals in the way we live our lives on a daily basis.

Through our growth has been the creation of progress that has added both beauty and modern ingenuity to the landscape that was once called a manifest destiny stretching from sea to shining sea.

Before we can sit back and marvel at all of the great things that have been accomplished in this country there has to come a point and time for a frank conversation about the unfinished business that still exists in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Unfinished business in the way we view race, religion, sexual orientation and gender where we are miles away from having open and honest discussions about why we choose to live behind invisible walls.

Unfinished business in understanding the history behind some of the greatest hot button issues that seem to creep up and invoke conversation among the populous only to be swept under the rug for next celebrity or political scandal.

Unfinished business in understanding a culture of hero worship that only ends in muddying up the people we hoist onto our shoulders when they become disposable commodities.

Living in a country that has open and transparent elections, laws that state every man, woman and child are entitled to due process along with employment protection and safe guards from discrimination are privileges no American can ever forget or take for granted.

When we look at the system of Civil Rights Laws that put meaning behind the words all men are created equal; stopping to marvel at everything our country has achieved is simply not enough.

Without having the unique understanding of the mistakes that occurred in our nations past we can never have a true respect for the protections we enjoy today.

The laws of nature state that everything happens for a reason and one mans revolution will always be the beginning of another’s.

The revolution of indoctrination to popular opinion allowed atrocities like the slave trade to begin and continue which in turn changed into a racial power play to segregate society into groups to cultivate the thought that slavery was ok on a cultural level.

After the abolishment of slavery safe guards were not made to ensure that all men were viewed and treated as equals.

The revolution that occurred to combat all the cards on the table saw the statement of all men are created equal transform from a phrase based on the aspect of wealth, royalty, religion and societal status into a broad term that welcomed in men and women of every race, religion, gender and nationality.

In today’s society we are taking these struggles for granted as we pick and choose aspects of American history for personal gain. The cause behind every revolutionary movement of cultural change in society was for a group of people to gain equal ground with the prevailing majority or ruling group.

The simple concept of equal rights has spawned an era of opportunism and personal attack that has scene the fall of men and women who were once considered pioneers for the slip of the tongue or not jumping on a certain bandwagon.

The beauty of broken glass ceilings to the best man or woman for the job is now a dagger used to force people into submitting into a certain belief or political doctrine.

Doctrines that state “you’re either with us or against us” in the pushing of legislation created without the idea of compromise.

The age of backlash is upon us and the fever is growing on the streets of America as the voice of dissent is at the forefront of the conversation.

Anger is now the ruler of the day as the ghost of George W. Bush is simply an afterthought to the urgency of now and the need for our nation to reach a true state of recovery to mend the wounds that have been covered up instead of treated for the past decades.

Decades where our country has gotten lean in times of economic downturn with solutions of fixing the mess coming down to borrowing the money from rogue nations or pacifying the populous through election gimmicks.

Our luck has always been rooted in quickie economic booms through oil or tech stocks that tend to fade before funds are used to prepare for the dangers of tomorrow.

Dangers of tomorrow that became the problems of today in the creation of doomsday scenarios that have left us pointing fingers to empty offices and past administrations instead of looking at the leaders who are still sitting in positions of power while the problems are staring us in the face.
